SPARKPLUGS TAKE SECOND HARDEST DEFEAT OF YEAR Speedway lost its third consecutive game, Friday, Feb. 20, to I mark up its last scheduled game) and longest losing streak of the year. The Sparkplugs who were definite favorites over Decatur Central continued to look very bad. At the end of the first quarter, Speedway was behind only two points' but after that, the Hawks pretty well controlled the game. However, during the third quarter, the Brown and Gold came I back into the game and the Speedway fans began to have hope, for this period ended with Decatur leading by only four points. The Sparkplugs* ~ra 11 y was shortlived, for in the fourth quarter, they succeeded in scoring only three points as the Hawks poured through enough baskets for 12 points. This 49-36 tromping was the second worst defeat which the team has suffered in their 1947-48 campaign, the first being the 15 point defeat at the4iands of Lawrence Central. 29 points between them. Although these two Hawks can’t be overlooked, the Sparkplugs hurt themselves badly, committing a total of 25 fouls. Once again these were the deciding factor for had the Sparkplugs not fouled so frequently, the game might have been theirs. The Junior Sparkplugs ended their season by staging a rally in the last half to defeat Decatur’s team 34-28. Many times during the game, the score was tied or extremely dose—the half tied up at 13 all. Nevertheless, Speedway’s five had an uphill battle all the way. Getting off to a bad start, the team fought violently to gain an advantage. Coach Clyde Sallee substituted 10 different boys trying to ’find the right combination against the Hawks. He seemingly did so, enabling the Seconds to end their season with 9 wins and 6 losses.
