Orgude Matter Kffls Bacteria Soils low in organic matter are not favorable for development of viruses that fight disease-spreading bacteria. To get plenty of organic matter, fertility must be put back ’ into the soil Besides manuring and the return of crop residues, the growth of deep-rooted legumes well fed with phosphorus and potash is vital. Not only will such a soil management system increase yield per acre and provide more crop residues, but also it will rebuild soil structure, improve tilth and make the soil a better storehouse for plant food. \ Catguts and Chamois Chamois skin does not come from the chamois. It is made from the skin of calves, goats and sheep And catgut is not made from the intestines of cats but comes from sheep.

Butler Play DePauw ————— Continued from Page 1Pauw team as part compensation for their loss in the final Indiana Intercollegiate Conference game of the season last year in Green- 1 castle. At that time the Bulldogs were undefeated in 1.1. C. play. This season the Bulldogs are going into the DePauw contest with one loss in 1.1. C. play and claiming victories oyer St. Joseph’s, Canterbury, Wabash, DePauw, and Valparaiso. Wabash’s Little Giants upset the Bulldogs on the Wabash home floor for the only Butler conference loss of the season. Before the DePauw game the Hinklemen will face Valparaiso Tuesday night (Feb. 17).
Coach Hal Hickman has seven returning lettermen to bolster his squad this season. Four of them are lettermen and the fifth, Russ Freeland, is a 5-foot 11 inch freshman guard. Teamed with Freeland is a combination of forwards Tom Beck (6’1”) and John Mote (6’), center Earl “Red? Gardner (6’3”) and guard Dick Light (5’10”). For one of the few times this season, Tony’s ponies will be Working with superior height in the starting lineup. Hinkle is expected to use his regular starting combination of forwards Jerry Cranny (6’2) and Ralph “Buckshot” O’Brien (s’B), center John Barrowcliff (6’5), and guards Charles Maas (6’l) and Jimmy Doyle (6’). O’Brien is leading the Butler squad in season’s scoring with 202 points of 18 games. Following him are Jimmy Doyle, 187, Charley Maas, 119, John Barrowcliff, 116, and substitute Bill Shepherd, 106. O’Brien has hit 83 of 243 field goal attempts, Doyle 74 of 220, and Maas 44 of 147. Following the DePauw game the Bulldogs will have only one game with Western Reserve in Mid-American Conference play on Feb. 28.

Cory, school, superintendent, left today for Atlantic City, New Jersey where he will attend the meetings of the American Association of School Administrators. ~ The Speedway debate team participated in the annual triangular debate between Wiley of Terre Haute, Elwood and Speedway at Butler University last Saturday. Wiley was unable to participate and Speedway won the debate over Elwood. Speedway participated in a non decision debate at Fairmount last Tuesday and will meet Shortridge High School in the sectional contest next week. SPARKPLUGS FALTER AT GIANTS' HANDS With Sectional time drawing upon us. Speedway’s Brown and Gold allowed Ben Davis, runnerup’ for the County Championship, to roll over them by a score of 44-35. Such usual high scorors as Allan Wiechers and Konnie King failed to add their usual spark to the team’s scoring while substitute guard, Bill Roberts, displayed some excellent defensive and offensive playing in what was perhaps his best game thus far this season. The team continued to be plagued with mishaps. Several members played with colds and Jack Vaughn was out of the lineup, due to an injury received at the Washington game. There’s an old saying in basketball that you just can’t beat a hot team. If this be so, the Sparkplugs need not feel bad at their loss—for Ben Davis was literally throwing everything but the kitchen sink at Speedway’s five. Ben Davis’ outstanding center, Shofner, led the Giants’ attack, racking up I'B points. The game started fast, but the Sparkplugs could not keep rolling at the terrific pace. The first half ended with the Plugs on the weak end of a 18*26 score.
In the third quarter, the Giants’ scoring attack slumped as they were held to only three points while the Sparkplugs proceeded to mark up seven badly needed points. It looked for a while as if the team might once again hit its stride and with but a few minutes to play—Speedway found the’ score tied at 32 all. However, it was at this point that the Sparkplugs literally fell apart, missing several nice shots and allowing the Purple and White to run away with the 9 point lead. Speedway’s second team also had a hot potato to handle. Ben Davis’ Junior Giants had more than a little trouble with the Sparkplug reserves, but before the game was over—Ben Davis, obviously the more experienced team, managed to gain a 25-19 decision in a not-so-mild contest They'll Be Sony “Friend Smithers,” remarked a neighbor to the old gentleman whose family had relegated him to a dark little room in the attic, “don’t you think your children are treating you rather badly?” “Yes, I suppose they Are,” admitted the old man. He 'pondered the question a few moments, then suddenly crackled with.glee. “But they have children,” he added, “and they will avenge me!” The secret of successful saving is to spend what you have left after saving, instead of saving what is left after spending. European Check-Up By GEORGE S. BENSON President d Hardin? College Searcy. Arkansan
HOW WOULD YOU like to be able to take a five-weeks’ trip to Europe to see if what you’ve heard is true? Mr. Ernest T. Weir, chairman of the National Steel Corporation of Pittsburgh, did just that. He made informal contacts with people of all sorts. Then he had opportunity to interview outstanding men of finance and industry in each country. Because of Mr. Weir’s nationally recognised leadership, and because I consider him a far-see-ing and capable observer, I want to give you some of his conclusions. English businessmen he interviewed think England must work out her own salvation. They said more U.S. dollars poured into England would be harmful. Our |4 oillion loan to them has been wasted, they told him, and has kept England from facing problems squarely. “England’s greatest need is for better government, more work and greater production.” Follow-up FRANCE, exceptThe Money! ing war-torn areas, was in about the same physical shape as England. “The most serious condition in France is the black market, in money,” he added. The black market offers twice as many francs for a dollar as the government allows officially. “The great problems of France are bad government, encouragement of the people to believe they can live without working, and the consequent failure of the people generally to» produce.” Me. Weir thinks the German people mfist have full liberty in the reconstruction of their country. He branded the Morgenthau plan, as applied in Germany, “one of the great crimes of history.” America should stop loaning or giving money without
Navy Proclaims Feb. 22 to 29th “Fill The Fleet, Week” LfrCSWjmander I. J. Davenport, the officer in charge of navy recruiting for the state of Indiana, has announced that the navy has proclaimed the week of-Feb. 22 to 29 as the official “Fill the Fleet Week.” This week will climax a year of intensive recruiting for the U.S. Navy to replace 232,000 vacancies occuring in the navy due to that number of men whose enlistments expire between July of 1947 and July 1948. This is the greatest recruiting task the navy has been confronted with in its history. The quota for the entire country is 15,000 enlistments per month. Throughout the country i the navy recruiters have procured over 95 per cent of the quota for the months of November and December 1947 and January of this year. However, they fell considerably short for the preceding months of July to October 1947. The state of Indiana has only averaged about 68 per cent of its quota of first enlistments for the first half of this fiscal year. To compensate for the deficit in the previous months and stimulate recruiting for the future, Mr. Davenport announces that the navy is offering unprecedented inducements by setting up two new programs for the benefit of the new recruit; Anyone interested in more de-

proper planning and full investigation of the use of the money. At the same time, he believes Germany is a safe place to put funds for reconstruction, with Ptoper plans. Need For THE INDIVIDUALLesdership ISM of the people in England, France and the United States makes communism an unreal danger. He believes the people in these countries will never, for long, permit “the iron heel on their necks.*’ It is his belief that a program financing foreign nations so they will not go communistic is without justification. “People who will stand for 6ommunism will go in that direction irrespective of what we may do to the contrary.” Europe is loafing on the job of genuine recovery, he believes! “The day they roll up their sleeves and go to work, recovery will begin.” Visitors find the English and French, supposedly starving, working only 40 hours a week. Mr. Weir asks: “Why don’t they adopt a six-day week, which would greatly increase the production of all materials?” There are enough resources and manpower. “Given the right kind of leadership and adequate incentives . . . the peoples of Europe would work harder and more productively.” Mr. Weir’s phrases “right kind of leadership” and “adequate incentives” suggest the key to this entire puzzle of European difficulties Take away the profit motive and people lack incentive to work Then add tax oppression and all the decay of leadership that Europe has had to put up with The result is unrest and economic chaos. Plan Program of Driver, Education And Training Butler University To Participate Participation of the Butler University College of Education in a state-wide, program of Driver Education and Training was announced today by Dr. P. M. Bail, dean. The new course will be offered at Butler during the week of Feb. 16-20 and will seek to train high school teachers in the operation of a dual control driver training car so that high school student driver training classes may be organized. Morning and afternoon sessions will be held during the five day program, Dr. Whisler said. Registration will be held Monday morning, Feb. 16. . The trouble is we spend too much time thinking about what is going to happen, and too little time making things happen. He who keeps his nose pointed in the direction he wants to go, need not worry about his feet finding the right path. Lack of ability is compensated for by an excess of generosity—in dishing out advice and criticism.
