U.S.NwylsNow Conducting Great Recruiting Drive The officer-in-charge of U. S. Navy recruiting for the Indiana district, Lt. Com. L J. Davenport, has announced that the U. S. Navy is now conducting the greatest recruiting drive in history to procure enough men to replace the 242,000 men being discharged from the fleet by July 1 of this year. There are now 27 Navy Recruiting Stations in the Indiana district for men between 17 and under 31 years of age to apply for information concerning a naval career. Mr. Davenport said that never before has the navy offered so many opportunities for a young man to further his schooling and learn a skilled trade as it does now, particularly during the all-out drive the navy is now conducting to enlist qualified men for the service.

He-man favorite, and for most women too. is any dish with Suuertruut. This recipe uses Beef Bn«i.et, —k good item for price-conscious cooks and a change from the usual franks or spareribs combination. Flour J lbs. beef brisket with 2 tbsp, flour and brown in 2 tbsp, hot fat in heavy frying pan. Add small amount of water, cover, cook until almost tender. Add 1 qt. sauerkraut; H cap sliced onion, IM cups grated raw potato, 1 tsp. caraway seed. 1 tbsp, sugar, 1 cupbmling water. Cover, cook about 30 mins, over low simmer flame. • • • • - Deep fat frying isn’t too complicated a cooking process if you rethat most important to maintain even heat. Keeping the flame at correct heat also saves waste of food and fat Fat that gets too hot can’t bo used more than once or twice. If you have recently bought a new gas range, one built to “CP’’ standards, remember that the oven preheats faster than older models and needs less gas to keep fixed oven temperature, • < * Fudge won’t boil over if butter is rubbed around the top of the pan. • •. • A change from the usual cereal for breakfast, and* nourishing too. is French toast. It’s a saving use for stale bread usually thrown out. Dip stale bread slices in an egg and milk mixture, fry same as pancakes over medium low heat.
Juvenile Cases Show Decrease Judge Joseph O. Hoffman, in his first annual report since taking office on Jan. 1, 1947 states that 2,009 juvenile cases were received in Juvenile Court in 1947, a reduction of 610 from the 2,619 juvenile cases received in 1946. The statistics of the Juvenile Aid Division show a smaller decrease in juvenile delinquency in Marion County, but the Juvenile Court’s large decrease results from the practice of the Juvenile Aid Division of the Police Department in referring a smaUer percentage of cases known to them to the Juvenile Court. This practice is in accord with the recommendation of the recent survey that othei child welfare agencies take more responsibility for children and that the Juvenile Court should not be used as a dumping ground. Consequently, many of the cases formerly referred to the Juvenile Court are being referred to other child welfare agencies. Of the 2,009 cases referred to Juvenile Court, 1,301 were delinquent children, 834 were dependent and neglected children,

yrs Hava AAwvffi/i I ligious award One of the highlights of Scout Week is Civic Day. On this day, Eagle Scouts selected will take over the various jobs of the city government and for 24 hours will be Mayor, City Clerk, City Judge, Librarian, etc. \ - The public libraries cooperating with Boy Scouts will feature the “Book of the Week,” namely the Boy Scbut Handbook which next to the Bible is still the best seller. Special displays will be in all libraries. By happy coincidence, Lincoln’s birthday falls in Scout Week and the Scouts will honor this great American by a service in front of his statue in the University Park. Individual Units are also planning special activities, such as special hikes, good turns, window displays, etc. to recognize Boy Scout Week. “Favorite Story” Heard at New Tiine The popular half-hour radio dramatization, “Favorite Story” with Ronald Colman, presented by Indianapolis Power & Light Company each Thursday night over WISH, will be heard at a new time, 6:30 p. m., effective with the'Feb. 5 show. In shifting from 9:30 p. m. to the earlier time, it is felt that the dramatizations will be made available to a larger audience, particularly youngsters who have complained that bed-time interfered with their listening. At 6:30 p. m., ‘Tavorite Story” will head a new line-up of WISH programs with Ellery Queen, the muchheralded new Henry Morgan Show, Willie Piper and The Clock following in order. , No changes have been made in the other two Power & Light radio shows, with Ted Lewis continuing to be heard over WIRE at 6:15 p. m. Saturdays, and Phil Spitalny and his all-girl orchestra on the Electric Hour of Charm at 4:30 p. m. each Sunday. to England granted a charter to toe Spectacle Makers gußd.
