Red Cross Sewing Units Work Without Public Recognition
Faithfully working without public recognition, groups of women, for the past seven years, have met regularly in this city’s churches to sew under the direction of the American Red Cross. Without vacation, once a week these skilled needlewomen have packed their sandwiches and gathered together in the church basement dining rooms, stopping at noon for a half hour and then resuming their sewing. During the war, hospital garments for the armed forces were made. Pajamas, bath robes, comfort bags, etc., were turned out by as many thousand as the quota required. As the need for these articles lessened, garments for the destitute of Europe were cut and made, consisting of wearing apparel for adults and children of all ages. Coats, capes, overcoats, and boys’ shirts have been the last articles made. The Indianapolis chapter of the Red Cross is completing the unfinished quota of adjoining states. As one chairman said: “Our reward has been the thrill from the thought that somewhere a little child is warmer apd happier because we had given a little time.” The chairmen who have served their church sewing units for seven years are Mrs. John Schakel, Emmaus Evangelical Lutheran; Miss Laura M. Buehler, All Souls Unitarian; Mrs. Willa Scraper, Tuxedo Park Baptist; Miss Carrie Francis, Tabernacle Presbyterian; Mrs. H. B. Campbell, St. Matthews Lutheran; Mrs. S. J. Rudolph, St. Phillips Neri; Mrs. A. Seitz, St. Johns Evangelical; Mrs. G. R. Dearinger, Old Bethel Methodist; Mrs. H. J. Pier, Linwood Christian; Mrs. Albert Stump, First Presbyterian; Mrs.

L. C. Stang, Fairview Presbyterian; Mrs. Walter Baxter, Brookside Community Church; Mrs. C. E. Keller, Broadway Methodist, and Mrs. M. E. Glick, Elks Ladies. The next project for the sewing units of the Indianapolis Chapter of the American Red Cross will be making garments for the local institutions and hospitals. “Teach me the art of forgetting; I often remember what I would not, and cannot forget what I would.” ' I —Themistocles.
