Service Needs Of Veterans A Look Ahead Through 1948 In the light of the current service needs of veterans and of past experience, the Committee on Service to Veterans presents the following considerations for attention and action in the local community through 1948: (1) During 1948, any volume diminuation of problems and needs of veterans arising from service in the Armed Forces will be offset by the increasing complexity of these problems and needs. / (2) Young adult groups made up mainly of veterans will have increasing expectations of service from community agencies, especially in recreation and in services to young married couples. (3) The needs of war disabled veterans will increase—in assistance in reopening of claims, in hospitalization and medical and psychiatric aid, in training and educational matters, and in obtaining employment. (4) Housing for veterans will continue to be of major importance, calling for the fullest organization of the community in the veteran’s behalf. (5) Veterans on the campus will probably increase in number, including the married veteran who will need cooperation of community agencies to assist the educational institution to meet needs for housing, nursing and medical care in the home, nutrition service, day care' for children, recreation opportunities, and employment opportunities. (6) Employment of veterans coming new into the labor market from college and on-the-job training and from service will call for continued Maintenance of employment services and of counseling services. (7) Claims and other services to assist the veteran to obtain government benefits due him will continue as a specialized service need everywhere. (8) Service on personal and family problems arising both from service in the Armed Forces and from civilian life will face more complex problems and in increasing volume. (9) Organization of the community for care of increasing numbers of transient veterans should take into account the principles and community organization suggested in the pamphlet, “Veterans on the Move,” published by the National Social Welfare Assembly. (10) The young veteran particularly feels the high cost of living pinch of a prosperity economy. Should a recession occur during this period veterans problems and needs will increase

ToShowFree Motion Pictures Of China Today
Would you like to see a free motion picture on the struggle and conditions existing in China today? Central Public Library, Meridian and St. Clair streets, has invited the public to attend a free showing of the March of Time film “China” at 8 p. m. Jan. 14 in its auditorium, Miss Marian McFadden, city librarian announced today. In addition to this film, the library will present a short feature taken in China during World War II by the 14th Army Air Forces. Some actual combat scenes are in this picture. The film showing is a part of the library’s world affairs program which is designed to stimulate interest and understanding of major problems faced by the United States. With the question of aid to China now pending, the film should help to give the public a better understanding of conditions and needs in that country. Crooked men sometimes get business, but only straight ones keep it.
heavily as the disabled, the young worker without seniority or a long job record, the student veteran depending on part ployment, the young married couple, will be among the first to be disadvantaged. Should recession signs appear, every community will need plan for these groups. (11) All of these considerations plus the gratitude of the home community to its veterans require continuation of the organization of community agencies and interests for service to veterans through a Community Committee on Service to Veterans in the Council of Social Agencies or under other appropriate auspices. Central information and referral services for veterans or for the entire community will continue as a need, through a veterans or community center as long as volume justifies, or otherwise through allocation of the responsibility to an individual * “HE STILL NEEDS A GOOD NEIGHBOB. -

RUSSIA today is firmly opposed to almost everything and anything that America suggests. There is one possible exception, and that is: aid to Russia. Since Russia’s cross-purposes with us are so evident, it is natural to ask why she got that way. Why does she find it convenient, ever to go out of her way, to oppose America? It is not because we did not help Russia enough during the war. Matter of fact, we helped Russia then to the extent of $11,681,000,000. This was lend-lease, of which we will expect little or nothing in return. What we got from Russia in reverse lend-lease, compared' with the more than slll4 billion that went her way, was little more than 1/500 of one billion —only $2,213,000. Disguised TfIEN, when UNRRA Purposes decided to accumulate a big fund to help needy nations, America gave $2^79,000,000 —70 per cent of the total. The Russians did not .put up anything. Yet Russia has helped to manage UNRRA and has so manipulated the aid to several European countries that the people there thought they were being helped by Russia, rather than by America. The Marshall plan proposes that America use from sls to $22 billions in an effort to get European countries on a self-sus-taining basis. Not only does Russia oppose this aid, but she has inspired the creation of the Communist International. This organization operates in nine different countries and is dedicated to complete opposition to

WHAT’S IN A NAME? • • • Q. Our family name is Patrick. We are thinking of naming our infant daughter Patricia. Do you think the two names would go well together?—Mrs. W. P. A Patricia Patrick would make a pleasant-sounding name. However, Patricia and Patrick have the same meaning: “noble; patrician.” But to me that is no serious objection. Patricia is pronounced: peb-TRISH-uh. Q. Does Carmen Miranda’s name have any meaning?—L. T. A. It does, and, whether by design or coincidence, the name could hardly be more appropriate for a singer. Carmen means “song.” Miranda means “worthy of admiration.” Q. A friend insists that Ulysses S. Grant was not the correct name of the eighteenth president. How can that be soT-Mrs. J. M. V. A. The general was christened Ulysses Hiram Grant. But the congressman who appointed him to

anything that resembles American policy in international affairs. Opposite JUST WHY this conSystems tinued opposition from Russia? In my opinion, it comes definitely from the fact that Communism is irreconcilable to the American way of life. If it be observed that Communism did not offer opposition during the war, it may also be observed that Communist leaders temporarily went underground while America was helping Russia stave off disaster. As soon as the war was over, as soon as lend-lease quit flowing to Russia, the Communists began to oppose every move for peaceful stabilization. They wanted defeated countries to remain defeated. Peaceful and prosperous countries find Communism unattractive, indeed. But Russia has now solidified her opposition to peace. Russia offers longrange opposition to America’s desire for peace, through her International. This is the answer: Communism is antagonistic to almost every basic principle in the American way of life. It is opposed to religion, to the sacredness of marriage, to private ownership of property, to freedom of the individual, to freedom of the press and of speech. The Russians deny that we can be their- good neighbors. They fear a demonstration of the superiority of the American way—a brand of democracy that does not need to call up an International to protect itself.
West Point got the name wrong, writing “Simpson” instead of Hiram. Grant, on learning that he had been officially entered as Ulysses Simpson Grant,” accepted the new middle name rather than go through the red tape of having the error corrected on the academy’s records. Incidentally, Ulysses should not be pronounced “YOO-Uss-iss.” The correct pronunciation is: yoo-USS-ees. The name means “a hater.” Q. Is it true that Lake Huron is a corruption of “heron,” the bird? —O. W. A. No. Huron is French for (figuratively) “an unkempt ruffian.** The name was given by the French to a confederation of Iroquoian Indians. • • • San Diego: Please pronounce the word “churrigueresque, a style of architecture.—W. F. H. Answer: The word is from the name Jose Churriguera, a Spanish architect (1650-1723). His name is pronounced: hoe-SAY choo-ree-GAY-rah.

In April and May of 1947, he-made a missionary tour of 10,000 miles of Latin American Mission Stations, speaking in Mexico, most of the Central American Countries Ecuador, South America, Haiti, and Jamaica. Marvin Lewis is brother to the very popular youth leader, Dr. Clifford Lewis, who has appeared iq local Youth for Christ rallies in the past; however, this is the first appearance for Marvin. Many of us need the prayer of the old Scot who feared that he might become like so many he saw around him—dead from the chin up—and hence his daily petition: “O Lord, keep me alive while I am still living!*
