Stalnaker Warns Home-Buying Vets Against Illusions William C. Stalnaker, Director of the Indiana Department of Veterans’ Affairs, has come out with a warning to veterans against any illusions that they may be fully protected in a home purchase even though they buy under the loan guaranty provisions of the GI Bill of Rights. “Have no illusions or false hopes,” Stalnaker is quoted as saying in the December issue of the Indiana Veterans' Review, official Department publication. “The only guaranty involved is one of up to 50 percent or S4OOO to the lender (bank) on its mortgage.”
Stalnaker added that even the latest Veterans Administration periodic building inspection policy move will not protect the bulk of v?t home buyers because the VA policy applies only to new home developments of five or more family units. “That’s the joker,” the Hoosier vet director points out ‘Tor the many ex-Gl’s who buy an individual new home under the GI Bill, there is still no periodic construction checkup. They are still the victims of a good deal of shoddy construction and material, skimping.” Stalnaker recommends that any veteran seriously considering buying a new house, or any house, under the GI Bill or otherwise, consult with impartial experts and a good lawyer from the outset of his negotiations. “Get everything in writing—for the protection of all concerned,” Stalnaker urged. 1 Few of us can hope to ipake the world better, but all of us can refrain from making it bitter.

High School Graduates Offered Army Career A wide variety of trades and other vocational specialties are available to mid-year high school graduates who can qualify to take advantage of the U. S. Army Career Plan, in which young men specify their choice of specialist courses even before enlisting, according to Capt. Joe C. Tyler, Commanding Officer of the Indianapolis Army and Air Force Recruiting Station. Open to men between the ages of 17 and 34 who are high school graduates or can show that their practical experience has given them an equivalent education, the U. S. Army Career Plan was described by Capt. Tyler as “one of the greatest incentives for career service in the history of the U.S. Army.” Capt Tyler explained that this plan makes it possible for a man to choose any three of the specialist courses offered by the-Army and apply for enrollment in these before enlisting. If he is accepted for one of the three, and is satisfied with the course in which he is accepted, he may then enlist in the Army for three, four or five years, with assurance that he will be assigned to that course.
Fifteen Army career fields in which courses are open under the Army Career Plan, according to Capt. Tyler, are Diesel Locomotive Repair, Map Reproduction, Electric and Acetylene Welding, Sheet Metal Work, Tailoring, Stenography, Radio Operation, Watch Repair, Athletic Instructors Course, Typewriting and Administration, Automatic Telephone System Maintenance, and Refrigeration Equipment Installation and Repair. Specific Army Training Courses available under this plan range in duration from 4 to 26 weeks. Capt Tyler said men who enter the Army under the Army Career Plan will be eligible to apply for Officer Candidate School. Application forms and full information are available at the local office of the U. S. Army and U. S. Air Force Recruiting Station, 416 Federal Building, Indianapolis, Indiana.
TROLLEY, BUS CHANGES JAN. 4 Ihdianapolis Railways will get off to an early start on its 1948 modernization program with several major changes on Sunday, Jan. 4. On that day the West Washington street car line will be converted to motor coach operation and important changes will be made in the East Michigan and East Washington service. Changes which will improve transit service and help the city’s traffic situation include 1. Substitution of buses for street cars on West Washington. 2. Elimination of the Drexel Gardens, Rockville Road and West Washington feeder bus lines. Existing feeder bus routes win become through routes to the downtown area. 3. Joining of the new West Washington line with the East Michigan bus line to provide cross-town service. 4. Eliminatidn of the downtown East Michigan loop to provide straight crosstown service on Washington Street. 5. Separation of the East Washington line to provide separate service The East Washington line
These changes will tend to straighten out the lines, eliminate traffic tie-ups in the downtown area and provide generally improved service for all patrons of all of the lines concerned. Applications Now Accepted For Aviation Cadets The U. S. Air Force will start another 12-month aviation cadet training course for over 800 potential flying officers on March 1 at Randolph Field, Texas. Applications for this training are now available at the local Us S. Army and U. S. Air Force Recruiting Office, it was announced today by Capt Joe C. Tyler, commanding officer of the U. S. Army and Air Force Recruiting Station, 416 Federal Building, Indianapolis. This training said Capt. Tyler is worth $35,000 to every young man who can qualify. It is modern and complete. ■ Aviation cadet training is open not only to enlisted men in the service and to war veterans, but also to qualified civilians with no previous military service, Capt Tyler said. Applicants must be citizens and unmarried male residents- of -the continental United States, however, and between the ages of 20 and 26%. Cadets must have completed at least one-half the credits leading to a college degree, or be able to pass an educational examination given by the air corp. Cadets appointed from civilian life serve three years in the United States Air Force unless their service is terminated earlier, Capt Tyler said. If they complete the course satisfactorily, they receive commissions in the Air Force Reserve and serve the regaining two years on extended active duty as flying officers. During this period they may apply for one year competitive tour of duty to qualify for a commission in the regular U. S. Air Force. 1

Common Sense A knowledge of past history should indicate to us, Lo! Our worst transgression is often selfishness, While a candid observation should make it all too plain, That our grasping motivations but return to us in pain. Take Bill and ild ... the farmers . . . Who chipped and bought a cow, Prosperity favored partnership until they had a row, They divided “Bossy” equally as both men thought it best, Young William took the front end while Ed got all the rest. ' For Ed; so bright the future with things as smooth as silk, Bill just fed the “critter” hay, but Ed’s end gave the milk, Poor Bill nursed his grievance until there came the day, He struck his half betwixt the eyes and Ed’s half passed away, Perhaps they’ve learned their lesson; ’tis difficult to say, Now Ed drinks only water while Bill has too much hay.
