SCHOOL NEWS (Continued from Page 1) $16,000 is to be transferred from other funds. .. The Speedway schools have an unusually strong program of extra curricular activities. The school band, the choir, the Speedette staff, the high school annual staff, the Future Business Leaders of America, the Future Homemakers of America, the Debate Club, the Dramatic Club, the Hi-Y Club, the Y-Teens, and the Student Council are among; the more active organizations. Many of these groups meet after school or at night. This program permits many of the 186 senior high school students to participate in three or four different activities. The school athletic program provides football, basketball and track as regular activities. The program also includes an intramural basketball program one night a week for high school boys and a junior high school boys’ program which meets one night or two nights depending upon the availability of the gymnasium. The fifth and sixth grade boys will start their program in February and continue in March. These activities for boys provide a program for all boys who wish to participate in grades 9 to 12 and for many boys in grades 5 to 8.
Committees have been named by N. D. Cory, school superintendent, to consider a chapter of the National Honor Society for Speedway and to consider the formation of a Girls’ Athletic Association for high school girls. Decisions on these will be made in the near future. The program sponsored by the Speedway schools is made possible because several members of the school staff are willing to work from 10 to 14 hours per day. Many programs continue until 6 p. m. each afternoon, and others from 6:30 or 7 to 9:30 or 10 at night. In addition the Boy Scouts, the Craft Club of the Masonic Lodge, the Cub Scouts and the P.-T. A. meet regularly in the school. Dances are held until 11 p. m. after each home basketball game. Attendance at these dances has averaged about 125 students this year. One class sponsor and either Mr. Jordan or Mr. Cory chaperon the deices. The Speedway School Board employs a custodian, Mr. Miller, who works from 11:30 a. m. until the last activity is over at night in order to make the program possible. x

One of tiie greatest problems in the operation of Speedway schools is the scheduling of activities so that they will not conflict with one or two others or with church and community activities. Some activities were cancelled the week before Christmas. School was dismissed early last year in order to permit playing of the class tournament since it conflicted with use of the gym and community activities. Charles Langwell and Joy Schoenewey, Butler students and formerly in the Speedway High School Choir, are members of the Butler-Jordan Choral Union. They recently sang in the presentation of the “Creation.” Mildred Rosner is singing in a newly-organized girls* chorus at Purdue and has been elected secretary of the organization. The following students have received free tickets for the Indianapolis Symphony Sunday afternoon, Jan. 4. Bobbie Owings, Carolyn Jackson, Carolyn Rice, Loretta .Richards, Barbara Richards, Sharon Brady, Phyllis Dobbins, Marilyn Edwards, Margie McDaniels, Duane Earle and Donria Sarchett.
BROWN AND GOLD HANDED THIRD DEFEAT OF SEASON Speedway’s “hot and cold” bas- • ketball teams fell by the wayside Tuesday, Dec. 23, as an underdog Lawrence Central team handed the Sparkplugs a double defeat. Speedway’s seconds looked pretty good against Lawrence’s Cubs until the final quarter. The little Sparkplugs held a 9-8 lead at the end of the half. At the end of the third period Lawrence led 17-14, but in the fourth quarter Lawrence turned on the heat and walked away with a 24-15 victory. Lawrence opened the conference game fast and held the lead from beginning to end. During the first half Speedway scored only one field goal, while Lawrence’s sharpshooters scored seven field goals and at the intermission the scoreboard read in Lawrence’s favor 19-8. Speedway looked better, the third quarter and was able to score four field goals and five charity tosses. However, Lawrence’s ball chib continued their same brand of playing, pouring seven more field goals through the net. During the fourth stanza the Sparkplugs fought desperately to overcome the 13-point advantage which the Bears held, but for the fourth consecutive quarter the Bears outscored Speedway’s five and ran off with a 49-34 victory. Phil Brumley was high point man with 10 points. Jim Crumley and Konnie King followed dose behind with 9 and 8 points, respectively. Lawrence’s Maroon and Gray was a tall, fast-moving aggregation, and each member of their team seemed to play a vital part in their victory. This fact was made apparent as no one member scored more than 10 points toward the 49 point total.

A MIDWESTERN acquaintance of mine recently gave to a group of businessmen what he called a report of “a roller skate trip over a very large subject.” Sterling Morton, Chicago banker and industrialist, was reporting on a seven-weeks' trip to Europe. His remarks seemed to me worthy of a larger audience. This recent trip, according to Mr.. Morton, was no V.LP. excursion. (The Very Important People sometimes arrive at conclusions that have been planned by their hosts in advance.) Actually, Mr. Morton rented a small French car and drove it 2,600 miles, talking to everybody along the way. Because he speaks French fluently, our Midwesterner was taken for a Frenchman when outside of France, for an Englishman when in France but hardly for an American at any time. Peacetime IN FRANCE, Mr. Damage Morton reported the cost of living up ten times over 1937, with wages having increased six times. “How an elevator operator, for instance, can live on 8,000 francs a month is a mystery. Or how a laborer can be content on the official ration of two-fifths of a pound of bread a day. Things are very much out of balance.” However, Mr. Morton sees France on the road to recovery, in a physical way. BUT: “France is cursed with government employees. There always were droves of them—now there are hordes! One former Maqui suggested the way to improve conditions was to machine Sn half the *fonctionaires’l Even nqtor Byrd doesn’t go that far!

Help Them OF THE BRITISH: Produce "One can have noth- ' ing but admiration for . . . what they went through sp steadfastly. That they should be afflicted, in peace, with a government which has done, psychologically, financially and commercially, probably as much damage, is a cruel tragedy. Only the miracles of socialistic planning, applied to a fertile island underlaid with coal and surrounded by seas teeming with fish, could bring' about a situation in which the people are cold and hungry." On loans apd gifts: “I think it would be pouring money down a rat hole to make any more loans to governments, yet I feel that we should, for our own sakes, help those who are willing to help themselves. My idea would be to make loans direct to private producers on very easy terms and for productive purposes only ... We can’t stop Communism by giving corrupt or Inefficient' or minority governments the means of remaining in office. “We can stop it by building up the productive capacity of the threatened nations ... I doubt that Europe’s economy will be healthy until Germany again is producing and consuming . . . Britain, France, Italy, yqs, Germany, too help them to produce again. That is the way to bring stability and peace."

hundreds of churches of all faiths, but in Youth For Christ rallies, Bible conferences, high schools, colleges and private schools. He is a speaker of no mean ability, relating his subjects with the pictures and music. He is a favorite with young and old wherever he goes. There is no question but that he will be well received Saturday night at the Youth For Christ rally in the Roberts Park Methodist Church, Delaware and Vermont Streets, at 7:30. Roger Malsbary, director, will preside. A separate Children’s Rally, especially designed for those between the ages of five and twelve, will be conducted at the same time, with Rev. John Emblen in charge, in another auditorium of the church. It takes neither capital nor brains to set up in business as, a wholesaler of gloom.

Human beings, like chickens, thrive best when they have to do a lot of scratching for what they get. Probe great achievements, and great mistakes, and you will find pride at the bottom of both. The Test ' She (to husband after employing a gardener)—Why did you want me to hire the short man? The tall man had such a kind face. Husband—My dear, when you pick a man to work in your garden, judge him by his overalls. If they’re patched on the knees, you want him; if they’re patched on the seat, you don’t Trouble teaches us two things: (1> who our friends really are, and (2) who have been waiting to catch us bent over at just the right angle.
