disappointed in him and mistakingly believes her attitude is caused by a desire for material things. Accordingly, he asks his father, Jesse, for a larger share of the business .and suggests they move into a fngger house. His father’s answer is to him the strong box, which contains very little. Ira is completely mystified when Jesse explains that the money goes to purchase the pearl of great price; his father also tells him that he is not yet ready to- learn about this but suggests he listen to the Master. It takes the death of his father; a frantic but futile search for the pearl; a crowd of mourners, among them the blind and sick % whom Jesse had befriended; and Ruth’s explanation about the pearl before Ira at last realizes that the pearl his father spoke about meant his faith in God and his love for people. The pearl, explains Ruth, was Ira’s inheritance; the inheritance of honor and good will of every man who follows the teachings of the Master.
