The Bears of Central of Evansville seem to have a habit, a very pleasing habit to the Pocket City fans, of knocking off strong undefeated teams. Back in 1923 when the Alices of Old Vincennes came storming down the stretch to capture the state diadem, it was Central who ruined their their perfect season’s record, perfect season’s record. Then in 1930, it was Central who Hatchets from an undefeated season. Washington went on to win the title, winning from Muncie 32 to 21 in the finals. Now comes the ’46-47 season with the Jasper Wildcats bowling over all opponents, when along comes Central to score a most decisive victory over an undefeated Jasper team, 45 to 34, in a holiday meet at Lafayette on January 1, 1947. If (and if’s a big if) Jasper should go through the’ remainder of the

season undefeated, and tradition holds true to form, Jasper should win the state title. Central of Evansville is also undefeated at this time.
first Request for an Increase in Telephone Rates Since 1926
Rising costs the important reason. Telephone rates have remained low for years, while almost everything else has gone up in price.
T JBL HE Indiana Bell Telephone Company has filed an application for an increase in telephone rates. This is an important step for us and we would like our customers to know the reasons for it. We’dlikeyou to look at it as if you were running the tebtphrww hnrinnnw —' Suppose Yow Were Aunninp the You’d try to conduct it honestly, render good service, pay good wages and make a reasonable profit. That’s the way you’d try to do it but there would be one thing you’d have to ask of your customers. You’d have to get a fair price for what you sold. v That might change a little from time to time. If most costa went up, your price would have to go up too. When earnings are more than requirements, the excess ought to be spent for enlargement or improvement of the service or the price reduced. That’s the way we look at it in the Indhma Bed Telephone Company. We’ve made 12 reductions in Long Distance rates in the last twenty years and made the telephone more useful and of value to more people. This is one of the very few times when we have come to you and asked for an upward adjustment in rates. *lhe last time thore was an increase local telephone rates m xncnana was twenty yearsaio.

Wagos <md AH Maforidl Casts Have Gone Up The cost of almost everything that goes to make good telephone service has gone way up in cost. Since 1941 the payroll expense of this company, which makes up 64 % of our total costs, has-increased 196%. Material costs in general are way up. Here are a few examples of how prices have jumped. The cost of poles has doubled since before the war. Lead also costs twice as much. The price of copper is up over 60%. And installers’ trucks cost almost 60% more. Many other items could be listed. One of the biggest-increases has been about 75% to 100% in the cost of new buildings and in additions to present buildings. If you have bought a house or tried to have one built recently you know just how high building costs have gone. When we go out to buy anything we have the same problems you have. Cost of Doing Business Has Gone Ufc» Factor Than Oar Income Company earnings right now are inadequate because our cost of doing business has gone up faster than our income. To illustrate what we mean, let’s go back before the war to 1941 and compare our income, costs and earnings of that year with the present. Based on actual figures, for five months, beginning in July of this year, company income is up 71% over 1941, while costs are up 95%. Company earnings are down 38%. Earnings are now at a lower rate than in the worst years of the depression, back in the Thirties. • What makes these low earnings all the more significant is that they have come at a time when tha volume of telnphnnn business has been breaking all records. ' x . There seems to be no way of getting away from the hard foct that Mh coating more money to give you good urwa. and that wo must increase bur We do not ask that earnings be high—only that they bo enough to enable us to do the job. planning to spend $50,000,000 during the next three years. The people of Indiana are constantly needing more and better telephone service. Even though we have added 60,000 telephones this year, about 30,000 people in Indiana Bell territory are waiting for telephones. That’s because building and expansion were held up during the war and have been slowed up since by shortages. Many improvements are at hand that will make your own service far better than it has ever been before—as soon as equipment can he made and installed. In coder to carry out this big program, your telephone company must be able to earn enough to make thousands of men and women of average means want to invest their savings in the fmnartant to fvervbou’v It’s good to remember that the supply of money is not inexhaustible and no business has a monopoly on it. It flow® to the companies that offer continuing a reasonable return. It is importanty therefore, to everybody who usee the telephone—to every one who works for it—and to everybody who invests in it—that earnings be on a fair basis and in line with the service rendered and the job to be done. We want you to know that we ask for this rate increase reluctantly and only after increasing costs have made it necessary. The fact that we have been able to absorb these higher costs without an increase in rates for so many years is in itself a remarkable It shows how the policy of the "best possible telephone service at the lowest coot consistent with financial safety” has been carried out in The people of this city have always been, fair to the telephone company and we believe you will understand ths reasons for this request for increased rates. if you were running the telephone business, we believe you would say that it is a reasonable request at this time.
