BOY SCOUTS Continued from Paige 1 sioner. Honor guests at the "open houses” will be boys who do not already belong to a scouting unit, former members and returned veterans. Objective of the “round up” is “to prepare the Scout movement for full peace-time service to country and to youth,” Dr. Elbert K. Fretwell, chief Scout executive, said in a message to Scout leaders. Local Scouters, including C. Otto Janus, council president, and Delmer H. Wilson, Scout executive, have endorsed the program and urged Scout leaders of Indianapolis and surrounding communities to participate. Climaxing in a public recognition ceremonial early in December, ,at which time new Scouts will be inducted into their Dens, Patrols and Crews, the “round up” will continue for the next three months. Following the “open house” scheduled for each unit, will be a “round up rally” and several other activities. Troop, Pack and Senior Unit Committees will meet this month

to lay plans for hikes and outdoor meetings, parents and old timers’ reunions, special program features and service projects. Neighborhood Scout commissioners will assist Scout leaders in their preparations Lee declared. Troop committeeman and district officials have been asked to lend their support and all scouting personnel will concentrate on the nation-wide “round up,” both locally and nationally. Units will evaluate strong and weak points, mobilize competent leadership and make every effort to provide a finer program of activities.
Recruiting of new boys into Scout membership will be an outstanding part of the "round «p”. Prospective members will be invited to attend unit “round up rallies” where they will be given an opportunity to learn about the Scout movement and activities. Returned veterans will also be invited to serve in leadership capacities. Affecting program, leadership, organization and membership, the nation-wide “round up” is one of the most ambitious projects yet undertaken by the Boy Scouts of America, officials say. “To meet the demands of peace,” Dr. Fretwell said, “America must be spiritually and morally strong —just as she had to be physicallv strong to meet the demands of war. Strong scouting makes for a strong America, not alone today, but in the future generations.” Parents desiring more information about scouting may obtain it from their pastor or School principal, or call the council office, Li. 7391.
