Transit Operators Lead Safety Drive Trolley and bus operators are up with the milk man in the morning—and they put the sand man to bed at night. Because the local transportation system blankets the city and its operators experience traffic situations under all conditions, Indianapolis Railways is basing a concentrated safety campaign on the experiences of its operators. In traveling approximately 50,000 miles each day, the fleet operators are in excellent position to observe many needed improvements that are not seen by city police officials and the average motorists. From their recommendations have come changes in the Company’s equipment, traffic signals, parking areas, traffic regulations and safety zones. Each week the Indianapolis Railways safety committee confers on safety problems. The committee, is headed by Ray Harp, business agent of Division 1070, Amalgamated Association of Street, Electric Railway and Motor Coach Employees of America. Once a month about 800 employees sit down informally with management and union officials to discuss safety within the fleet and among motorists and pedestrians. The city traffic engineer and representatives of the city police traffic division and the safetv council al’o have been called into sessions to plan a mutual program.
