Army-V et-Student Tells of Death Sensation in Notes WILMINGTON, MASS. Scribbled notes, trailing off into an unintelligible scrawl, recording “sensations of approaching death,’* were disclosed by police after a medical examiner reported Richard P. Gale Jr., 21, son of a former Minnesota congressman, a suicide. The body of the young MIT armyveteran student, son-in-law of John Cowles, Minneapolis publisher and father of a six-month-old son, was found in the woods where it had lain two nights. Medical Examiner Ira Richardson said carbon monoxide gas from the exhaust pipe had caused death.
Wealthy Money Borrowers Slow in Repaying U. S. WASHINGTON. The State department is having difficulty collecting from some of its wealthier borrowers money loaned to them when they were stranded abroad by the war. Albert E. Clattenburg Jr., director of the project, said: “The only refusals have come from well-to-do people repatriated from the Philippines during the war who said that the government owed it to them.” He estimated that $24,792,175 has been loaned since the undertaking was started. About $914,578 has been repaid. ‘Operation Reverse’ Is Piling Up War Supplies SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF.-,“Op eration reverse,” in which surplus war supplies are returned to the United States from far-flung Pacific war bases, has dumped more than 707,000 tons of material on San Francisco wharves, the army re ported recently. The Bitter End To “the bitter end” has a nautical origin, reports Ships magazine. Thus, when the chain has been payed out to “the bitter end,” there’s nothing more that can be done.

Sour Milk In baking, sour milk may be substituted for sweet milk, cup for cup, thus giving lightness, tenderness and flavor to hot breads and gingerbread and spice cake. For every cup of really sour milk use Vt teaspoon of soda. For milk just beginning to turn sour, use V* teaspoon soda for each cup of milk. It is better to use too little soda than too much, because too much gives your baked products a bad flavor, bad odor and a yellow color. Mix the soda with the dry ingredients rather than with the milk because all the gas should be saved to leaven the baked product.

Esk Yolks Yolks of eggs have more food value than the whites. The yolks have minerals and vitamins for growth and health. Both the white and yolk are protein rich. Protein builds and repairs muscle. Thus eggs take the place of lean meat » in the meals. It is well to eat an egg each day. Eggs are easily digested if they are cooked at a low temperature. A high temperature in cooking toughens the white. Eggs cooked in water not quite boiling, are tender and jelly-like. Fried eggs should be cooked in fat that is not smoking hot.
