INDIANA BELL TELEPHONE CO., NOW ENGAGED IN HUGE EXPANSION PROGRAM
An increase since V-J Day of 50,000 telephones in service was reported by the Indiana Bell Telephone Company. This rapid growth, by far the greatest in the company’s history for a similar period of time, carried the total number of Indiana Bell telephones in use beyond the 400,000 mark, a gain of more than 100 per cent in ten years. The company pointed out that the rapid progress in new installations since the end of the war has been accomplished in the face of many difficulties. The manufacturing branch of the industry had to re-tool its plants for civilian production, and there have been, and still are, serious shortages of many kinds of materials and equipment needed to extend service to more subscribers. New applications for telephones have been coming in at a faster rate than ever before and in most places it is impossible to provide service immediately for all who have requested it. At the present time the company has about 26,1000, unfilled applications for service, compared with a peak
