Is Your Home Adequately Wired? Ninety-five per cent of America’s homes are wired inadequately for efficient utilization of electric service, Roy Thurman of the Indianapolis Power and Light Co. told the Indianapolis School for Home Planning at sessions this week at local high schools. Mr. Thurman pointed out that this is true because house wiring has not kept pace with the increased number of appliances in common use and their higher wattage. As an example, he Stated that e survey in 1942 of the company’s customers revealed an average of eight appliances in each home, compared with only an electric iron or toaster in earlier years. “Increased efficiency also has resulted in increased wattage,” Mr. Thurman declared. “The electric iron that in 1930 consumed 500 watts, in 1941 utilized twice that number. The same is true for the electric toaster. "In 1930, the home commonly was lighted with electric lamps of 40 and 60 watts. Today, the minimum generally is 60 watts, with lamps of 100, 200 and 300 watts in common usage.” Citing that existing wiring is a bottleneck to the full utilization of electricity in most present homes, Mr. Thurman urged that home planners demand adequate wiring to eliminate what he termed the ‘betopus outlets” found in so many homes today. “Octopus outlets,” Mr. Thurman said, "are wall outlets designed for plugging in one or two appliances, but which, due to an insufficient number of such outlets, are made to serve for four to eight appliances, through the use of two and three-way multiple sockets.” The speaker also emphasized the necessity of having the house wired with wire heavy enough to carry sufficient current to meet MARCH 21ST AND 22ND WILL BE "RED LETTER" DAYS FOR SPEEDWAYI

not only present, but future demands. Looking into the future, Mr. Thurman cited many new appliances which soon will be on the market. These included the precipitron, which will remove 90 per cent of the dirt from the air in the home; the germicidal lamp, which destroys harmful bacteria; sterilamps, which protect foods from harmful bacteria; the home freezing unit, automatic clothes washer, electric clothes drier, electric dish washer and garbage disposal unit, electric blankets, fluorescent lighting and frequency modulation radio and television. Home planning classes will be held at Emmerich Manual Training High School March 12, and Crispus Attacks High School on March 13. Patrons and pupils of School No. 54 will be special guests at the Children’s Museum Family Hour Sunday from 2 to 5 p. m.
