New Dwellings Will Be Available Soon For Veterans They Must Apply To Homes Registry Office Homes Registry, Inc., 224 North Meridian street, has been requested by the Mayors Emergency Housing Committee to accept applications for the demountable, sale dwellings and the Stout Field barracks-type government units. Any veteran wishing to have his name put on a list for these units must come to the Homes Registry office in person to make application. There, have already been a number of inquiries and the list is growing, so any interested veteran should not delay too long getting his name in. In the meantime, housing is urgently needed for many veterans and their families. Because of inability to find housing, some veterans are having to give up a good job and go to another area to seek employment. Long standing plans for taking advantage of the varied educational institutions of Indianapolis are having to be foregone, perhaps for good. The community needs the skill these young men would be able to acquire when first returned to civilian life as students. Anyone having an apartment, house or room with kitchen privileges is urged to call Homes Registry, a Community Fund agency, at OLi. 7365 and list it. Specifications on type of applicants desired are closely followed.

List Vacant Rooms Apts, or Houses For Veterans

A ray of hope is seen by discharged veterans in the possibility of obtaining housing in either the demountable dwellings or the Stout Field barracks units to be allotted to this area. However, these will not be available immediately and temporary housing is still necessary for those families who will eventually take advantage of the allocation of government units. Homes Registry, Inc., a Community Fund agency, at 224 N. Meridian street, already has had many inquiries regarding the proposed units and if the stream of applicants maintains as high a proportion of discharged veterans as it has in the past two months, there will likely not be enough for all those eligible men desiring them. This means that the cooperation of Indianapolis citizens also will be required to take care of the hundreds of veteran families still unhoused. List any room with kitchen privileges, apartment, house or double with Homes Registry at Li. 7365 in order that someone of the many deserving veterans in desperate need of housing may be the next tenant. They need help in this critical shortage. ‘Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom must, like men, undergo the fatigue of supporting it.”—Thomas Paine. American Legion Auxiliary Seeks New Members Many Women Have Become Eligible Scores of women in Irvington and East Indianapolis have recently become eligible to membership in the American Legion Auxiliary and many more will become eligible as soon as the veterans in their families join the American Legion, said Mrs. Clarence R. Parsons, membership chairman of Irvington unit, in explaining „ the new eligibility rules to the unit’s membership workers. Four classifications of women now eligible were described by Mrs. Parsons as follows: 1. Mothers, wives, sisters and daughters of members of the American Legion. 2. Mothers, wives, sisters and daughters of persons who lost their lives in either World War I or World War H. 3. Mothers, wives, sisters and daughters of veterans tof either war who have died since honorable discharge from war service.

4. Women who themselves were enrolled in the armed forces in either war. Women of families with men still in the service are eligible in the service man has joined the American Legion Mrs. Parsons explained. All members of the armed forces became eligible to the Legion upon the surrender of Japan and 'many have enrolled, or their families have sent them a gift membership, in advance of their return home. If the service man has not yet become a Legion member, the women of his family are not yet eligible to the auxiliary. The same condition applies to the mothers, wives, sisters and daughters of returned veterans. They become eligible to the auxiliary when the veteran joins the Legion, but not before, 'Mrs. Parsons emphasized.

WHEN THE MEETING IS CALLED TO ORDER When the meeting’s’ called to order And you look around the room, You’re sure to see some faces That from out the shadows loom. They are always at the meeting, And they’ll stay until it’s thru— The ones that I would mention Are the always faithful few. They fill the many offices And are always on the spot, No matter what the weather, Though it may ibe awful hot. It may be dark and rainy, But they are tried and true, The ones that you rely on Are the always faithful few. There are lots of worthy members Who will come when in the mood, When everything’s convenient, They can do a little good. They’re a factor in the meeting And are necessary, too. But the ones who never fail us Are the always faithful few. If it were not for these faithful, Whose shoulders at the wheel Keep the institution moving Without a halt or reel, What would be the fate of meetings, Where we claim so much to do? They surely would be failures If we lacked the faithful few. —John J. McKeogh in Postal Record, October, 1945, San Jose, Calif.

INITIATIVE You can tell a boy to go to the drug store for some medicine, and he will do it like a machine. But when a boy seeing an old man faint in a restaurant, runs to the drug store and brings back some aromatic spirits of ammonia, he uses his brains. It is one thing to take orders and follow them, but it is quite another to so organize yourself that you can proceed under your own initiative, make your own plans and produce results. . h Of course, two can live as cheap as one, but nowadays it takes both of them to earn enough to do it.
