The WOMAN’S REPORTER By LEONA ANNE CLAMPITT Rambling ■ ’Round with I apologies to Joe | Adams . . . My | pet peeve is | having people | behind me in the movies | crunching on | popcorn out of | a paper bag. K My version of
a movie I attended recently went something like this: “Darling, I love you” rattle, rattle, “marry me and together” crunch, crunch “we can start anew.” I am glad one bag of the stuff satisfied their appetite, for if it didn’t and they decided on seconds, I am afraid I would have had to start life anew south of the border or behind bars after committing an act of manslaughter. Now me, I like popcorn and I love movies, but I definitely do not like them together. In comparison—last Sunday afternoon I had the extreme pleasure of being invited to attend the Symphony Concert at the Murat. The audience was so quiet and attentive that one could almost hear his neighbor’s heart beat. Old Santa was a week late in getting to the Gerald Miller’s, but when he finally arrived he left something that has made the Millers the envy of the entire community. He left nothing less than a brand-splinter-new 1946 Ford. And is it ever pretty, light gray and all shiny. Maybe if we talk real nice, we’ll get a ride. The phone rang Monday a. m. and the voice on the other end said “I am one of your readers, and I want to tell you of a grand recipe for Fruit Nut Bread that appeared in the magazine section of last Sunday’s Star.” She went on to say that she made a loaf and it was superb, and she thought it would be nice to publish it in this column. So I looked it up and it isn’t copyrighted or anything so next week I’ll use it. This reader was very complimentary which pleased me no end. Thanks, reader, for your interest. As I look over the dreary, dirty landscape—thinks I, spring can’t come too soon for me. Then I look on the calendar and I find it is ten weeks away. That is a long time, but when one is busy and as you grow older (as is my case) time passes on wings. Remember last week I told you I would have a recipe for new and different yeast rolls? Well I have, and it was given me by one of my favorite people, Mrs. - Charles Purdy. A grand gal and a grand cook. Incidently, most of us will have to wait until the butter shortage is improved before making these rolls, but girls, do keep the recipe and try them because they are simply superduper. And here’s the recipe . . . 1 cake yeast 3 eggs % cup sugar, % lb. melted butter 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup milk 9 cups flour Crumble yeast in one tablespoon sugar, then beat eggs lightly, add sugar, salt, melted butter, the yeast, and milk. Then add flour, 1 cup at a time and beat after each addition, let rise 4 hours. Then divide into 4 parts and roll out to thickness of thick pie crust, brush with melted butter. Cut dough into sections as you would cut a pie, roll these pieces starting at wide end, then dip in melted butter and place on greased pan, point side down. Let rise 4 hours. Bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes.

A Vision Of Salvation Sitting alone in my armchair Recalling old and familiar scenes, My mind turns to pondering This life—and what it means. I marvel at God’s infinite patience With the errors and sins of men, And how, even thohgh we stumble, His love lifts us up again. He sees through the eyes of His people Much work for His hands to do. And thus He performs modern miracles, That our faith may be strengthened anew. / I For when men share the love of the Master, He is as close to them as their breath: Then mortal man becomes immortal And there Is no such thing as death. For the soul to outlive the body Is according to His promise and plan; And, although He made the sun and the stars, His most wonderful creation is man. Some say the stars may lose their twinkle— That the sun may fail to shine, But the souls of God-fearing men live on, Untouched by the march of time. So remember, when all things forsake you, That God took you into His plan The moment He gave you the breath of life— The moment that life began. —Henry G. Stiles. Before the war, Indianapolis Railways led the rest of the nation in modern, city-wide transportation equipment and service. We want to do it again. Even though we had plenty of problems during the war, we were determined to do the best we could during the emergency. When some service standards were forced down, we kept planning all the harder for the day when we could again make our city’s transportation system the envy of big cities all over the country. Right now, scores of our vehicles need to be replaced with improved post-war equipment. We’ve already received 15 diesel buses. Thirty more diesels plus 15 trackless trolleys

and 10 gasoline buses are on order. Many more will need to be ordered as soon as manufacturers can provide them. Present plans call for an over-all expenditure of not less than $3,500,000 in the next three years to make replacements and additions to our facilities. We want to furnish good transportation at uniform rates for all our customers, whether they use buses, street cars or trackless trolleys. We hope to do this with present rates. The existing fares (the token fare is lower than that charged by any comparable operation) are necessary to enable the company to keep its service and system as modern as our customers wish and deserve.
