Colorful Ceremonies Planned To Mark Opening of the 1945-46 Hockey Season
Indianapolis business and civic interests will join with the city’s fervent sports fans, Thursday night, October 18, in colorful ceremonies planned to mark the opening of the 1945-46 hockey season at the State Fairgrounds Coliseum, Thomas E. Grinslade, Grinslade Construction Co., and chairman of the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce athletic committee announced today. The Indianapolis Capitals clash with Buffalo’s strong team in the opening of the pennant race.
In a program designed to "reconvert*’ the popular winter sport from its wartime to full postwar status, state and city officials, including Governor Ralph F. Gates, Lt Gov. Richard T. James, and Mayor Robert H. Tyndall, have been invited to participate. Likewise, an invitation has been sent to Mayor Joseph J. Kelly, of Buffalo, N. Y., to attend and participate. The ceremony inaugurating postwar, winter sports events at the Coliseum is being planned by Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce Athletic Committee, and chairman Grinslade reports that

many business and civic groups have offered assistance to set an all-time attendance record for opening games. Mr. Grinslade points out that in addition to providing Indianapolis and Indiana sports fans with a thrilling winter sport event, the hockey team is a highly valuable business and civic asset to the city and state, helping to advertise the state of Indiana and city of Indianapolis in Cleveland, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Hershey, Pa., New Haven, Conn., Providence, R. L, and other cities where this sport is growing in interest. Ticket sales of the past few years prove that the games here attract a large representation of sport fans from many Indiana cities and towns, as far away as Evansville, and from Illinois and Ohio.
A special tribute will be paid World War II veterans who have returned to play with the Indianapolis and Buffalo teams and a sensational pursuit relay race between selected representatives of the two teams is being planned.
Take Mq Word For 111 By FRANK COLBY
HOW DID IT START? • • • Q.—Who was “Davy Jones’* and what is meant by his “locker”? A—ln nautical lore, Davy Jones has long been spoken of as the evil spirit of the sea. The name is supposed to be a corruption of Duppy Jonah. Duppy, a word used among Negroes of the West Indies, designates a malevolent haunting spirit And Jonah, of course, refers to the Jonah of the New Testament; his name has become a synonym for a person or thing that causes bad luck. Davy Jones’s locker is the bottom of the sea. Of lost ships or drowned seamen, it is said that they have gone to Davy Jones’s locker. Q. —How did the Mardi Gras carnival of New Orleans get its name? A—Mardi gras is French for “fat Tuesday.’’ It refers to Shrove Tuesday, which is the day before the beginning of Lent, therefore, the last day of feasting. In France a fat (gras) ox was ceremoniously paraded through the streets. In New Orleans the carnival of Mardi Gras ends on Shrove Tuesday. “King Rex,’’ accompanied by his “Mystick Krewe of Comus," appears in the spectacular parade of floats, and is later unmasked at the Mardi Gras balL In Roman Catholic countries the carnival is a period of festivals and merrymaking preceding Lent. The carnival takes its name from the Latin phrase came vale, meaning, “O flesh, farewell!” an illusion tg the putting aside of carnal things during the Lenten season. (Carnal is from the Latin carnls, which meant originally “a piece of meat”) BeU Syndicate.—WNU Features.

Freedom fterident nf Howltag
THE IDEA that certain rights' are everybody’s rights, and that no man can rightly , deprive another man of them, is one for which the world is indebted to Christianity. Obedience to Christ is voluntary or it is not obedience at all ancU being an everyday thing, Christianity lives and grows best in surroundings of personal liberty. Opposing dictatorship, resisting infringement by a few upon the liberties of many, is a reverent act of fidelity to the source of all freedom. No government is perfect; no economic system is perfect. For that matter, no church is perfect. 'All are subject, more or less, to leadership by imperfect people. Nevertheless some prineiplet are right and worthy of vigorous defense. Jealous SAID Hany Emerson Tyrants Fosdick: "One of the great hours in history struck when mankind ran into the idea that all the people should unite in making laws, which then all the people should obey. Behind our pitifully fallible experiments with representative government stands the Ideal, worth everything our fathers gave for it and all that we can give the democratic state.” One-man governments traditionally become jealous of their subjects’ loyalty to God; covetous too, perhaps, of their freewill offerings, large or small. Rarely do totalitarian states begin at the church when they start
A Little Red Feather Is Your Symbol Of Giving To A Worthy Cause, War And Community Fund
More than 4,000 volunteer workers taking part in the Victory campaign of the United War and Community Fund got off to/ a flying start this week. Thousands of little red feathers, symbol of the fund, are being seen in hatbands and on coat lapels, 4 indicating that the wearer has contributed to the support of the 46 agencies of the, Community Fund and 24 War Fund organizations.
J. G. Sinclair, general campaign chairman said that first reports from the army of workers indicate that the people of Indianapolis and Marion County are responding generously to the appeal for funds. The first full report meeting of all ten divisions in the campaign organization was held this week and the workers were confident, on the basis of early reports that the goal of $1,821,000 will be subscribed. The campaign will continue through October 23.
Mrs. Ralph J. Hudelson, division. chairman said that the women are considering the campaign this year as a “Thanksgiving” drive. “We feel that every woman in Indianapolis will want to contribute to the fund in thankfulness for the fact that the shooting, if not all the processes of war, is over,” Mrs. Hudelson said.
The residential division includes nine districts, which cover the entire city. x Dedcated to the men and women of Indianapolis and Marion County who served in the armed forces, the Victory campaign will be the final appeal for the War Fund agencies. Mr. Sinclair pointed out that many of the almost 50,000 men and women from this city and county in the armed forces and their families will have need for Community Fund services upon their return to the community. “Reconversion is bringing many dislocations necessitating increased services to families in Marion County,” the chairman said, “and

cutting off people’s liberties. They get around to it in the long run, however. There are about enough exceptions on record to prove the rule. Regulate DICTATORS usually Thtaridag start their trespasses on freedom by presuming to say who shall engage in trade. It is tile natural way to conftnenca. Never do they find a large class in commercial pursuits, so they can begin grabbing power without antagonizing a majority.- The next big strategy is to dominate the news. By this method a dictator can make his people think what he pleases. With buying and selling pinched under government’s heel, one emergency follows another, accidentally or by design; either way serves the purpose. Consumers, the class most hurt by government in business, never learn the truth if press and radio are under control. Selfish rulers snatch away comforts and dole out confusion and suspicion, the chains of serfdom. Traditionally tyrants work this way; it has happened all along through history. With business confiscated and news agencies seized, the people are poisoned with sinful malice. Americans who value their religious liberty rightly defend representative government, free enterprise, free speech and free press. They can fight on the front line and win, or wait to fight in the last trench and lose.
this demand will tax the facilities of-our agencies to handle them. In addition deferred building repairs and .improvements to agency properties should be undertaken 1 at once, and this is another reason why it is necessary to subscribe our goal. At the same time we are not forgetting our men in the armed forces, especially those in armies of occupation and military hospitals who need U. S. O. clubs and camp shows, and we cannot deny help now to our allies in liberated nations who are facing a winter of cold and starvation.”
