ST. CHRISTOPHER’S CATHOLIC CHURCH Rev. L. A. Lindemann.— .Pastor Sunday Masses: 6:00 o’clock Weekday Masses 7:00 o’clock At the eight-thirty o’clock Mass on Sunday, the members of the Altar Society and all the ladies of the Parish will receive Holy Communion. Wednesday, August 15th, is the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary—a Holy day of Obligation. Tuesday, the Vigil of Assumption, would ordinarily be a day of fast and abstinence, but of course because of the war our Archbishop Ritter has dispensed with all days of fast and abstinence except on Fridays. The Masses will be at the usual times for Holydays. At last a lay person, a M. Herriot, a former prime minister of France, has said in a speech what for a long time Catholic papers have been pointing out, and that is “I feel we in this country need to undertake moral rather than political reforms”. Immediately his words were quoted far and wide. Economics will never in themselves alone bring peace to nations so long as men cheat and steal. It is only when we return to the laws of God that lasting peace can truly reign. Father Flanagan of Boys Town, although his success with delinquent 'boys is known far and wide, still continues to study the cause of delinquency. He has said, “Delinquent children, as a rule, are the offspring of delinquent parents. These parents are offenders just as much as their children are, and they not only should be made to pay damages but should be required to attend instruction courses in parental responsibility”. In this life of hustle and bustle and all the modern mechanized equipment, we are sometimes apt to let ourselves think that there is little opportunity in the world today. When we get to thinking this way, we might well remember a quotation from Bliss Perry: “To make the most of dull hours, to make the best of dull people, to like a poor jest better than none, to wear a threadbare coat like a gentleman, to be outvoted with a smile, to hitch your wagon to the old horse if no star is handy—that is wholesome philosophy”. Opportunities are plentiful even in the humdrum affairs of life, if we will only open our eyes and our hearts long enough to see them. A perpetual novena in honor of St. Ann is held every Tuesday in St. Ann’s Church at 8 P. M. ‘Tf anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me”—St. Luke 9:23. Nora Bray
Crack Down On Black Markets Black market operators and gamblers will find themselves under the scrutiny of field examiners from the Indiana Gross Income Tax Division before another month rolls around, Frank T. Millis, state treasurer, announced here today. The fact that there has been a rush of Hoosiers correcting their federal income tax reports for 1943 and 1944 because of “forgotten” income is, in itself, an indication that taxes on similar amounts are due the state government, Millis said. “Every taxpayer should make certain that his state gross income tax report is corrected to agree with the amount reported to the federal government,” Millis warned. “In a case where the taxpayer suddenly ‘remembers’ that he had more earnings than he has reported, it’s to his own benefit to get right with the state at the same time he corrects his federal report.” Black market operators, who often choose to refer to their “take’' as commissions, fees, dividends, discounts or payment for personal services, find that their dealings are taxable at 1 per cent. In the event they qualify as a retail merchant the gross amount of their sales is taxable at onehalf of 1 per cent. The state gross income tax law

Home Gardeners’ Association A Garden Club was organized last month of interest to Speedway citizens, at the Purdue Extension building. There was a brief discussion given by Mr. Murphy, Marion County agriculture agent, on the common ailments of plants, insects, plant handling, the knowledge of soil and soil requirements. It was brought out that there could be more information obtained from large commercial companies in regard to seeds, plants and fertilizers through an organization than by an individual. Any person interested in this organization may contact Charles W. Hatton, 1646 N. Auburn, Be. 4358-J, K. V. Frick, 1120 Rosner Drive, Be. 0242-M. Lieutenant: “When I was a seaman, I thought nothing of a 24hour watch.” S 2-c: Frankly, sir I don’t think much of it, myself.”

It’s a ‘Marsh Buggy’ This curious giant automobile is designed for traveling in swamps and marshy areas. Its principal use at present is to carry a party of engineers and their equipment as they search for new oil fields. The giant wheels are hollow, so the machine can float, and thus travel in water of any depth. The tires, 10 feet in diameter, are made by the Goodyear company, as are the wheels. Maximum speed in water is four miles per hour, and about 20 on land. A number of new oil fields have already been discovered with the help of this marsh buggy. Many producing wells have been bored recently in the southern swamps. Jobs Daughters To Appear On Radio Speedway Bethel U.
