Jobs Daughters To Sponsor a Benefit Spring Dance

betty McClelland

Mrs. Pauline Gray, assisted by Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Swisshelm, are chairmen of a committee planning a benefit spring dance to be sponsored by the Jobs Daughters Bethels of the Indianapolis area. It will be held Tuesday evening, April 10, at the Sahara Grotto ballroom and the proceeds will be given to Wakeman General Hospital, Camp Atterbury, for the benefit of the recreation room. John Carty’s orchestra will furnish the music and a grand march will be held featuring all the officers of the various Bethels in this area. Assisting on the committee will be Mrs. Ann Price, Mr. Bovard, Mr. E. Cathcart, Mrs. Gilmore, Mr. Roy Gray, Mrs. Rice, Mrs. Hazel McClelland, Mrs. Mary Davis, Mr. Suma and Mrs. Elizabeth Wanby, vice grand guardian. Betty McClelland of Bethel 1, was elected “Sweetheart of the Demolays.” She will be the guest of honor. The Indiana Bethels presented the U. S. Army with their 13th ambulance, purchased through the national groups war activities.

FRESHSALADS FGR HEALTH Cheese Salads Peaches, pears or cherries combine well with cream cheese. Fill the hollows of canned peaches or pears with the cheese, plain or mixed with nuts, dried fruits or one of the chopped salad vegetables. Serve on lettuce with salad dressing. Make a little mound of the cheese on the lettuce and put slices of peaches or pears around it. Large white canned cherries with the pits removed or stewed dried apricots may also be combined with the cheese.

Cabbage Salads Use equal parts of grated raw carrots and finely shredded cabbage. Mix the carrots and cabbage together with salad dressing until well blended. Then add raw peanuts. Serve on crisp lettuce. Another good cabbage salad is made by adding onions cut in very thin rings to shredded cabbage. Season with salt, celery, pepper and paprika. Mix with mayonnaise or French dressing and serve on a cabbage leaf.

Vegetable Salad Combinations Cooked or canned green beans and thinly sliced raw or cooked carrots. Raw chopped spinach with diced tomatoes. Cooked or canned peas and chopped onions. Raw chopped spinach with hard-cooked egg. Sliced cucumber, sliced radishes, sliced onion and watercress. Cooked green lima beans, diced tomato, diced cucumber and chopped onion.

Avocado Secret Sprinkle avocados with lemon juice to prevent discoloration, and to add a zip of tart flavor if you wish it. Sailor (at City Auditorium dance): “Yes, Miss, I love dancing. It is absolutely in my blood.” Partner: ‘Then you must have bad circulation—it has not got to your feet yet.” Policeman: “How did the accident happen?” Motorist: “My wife fell asleep in the back seat.”

Clean-Up Week Schools, churches, dubs and mercantile interests, as well as departments of city government, are cooperatin’ with the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce Safety Council in observance of “Clean-Up—Fix-Up Week " April 7-14. Mayor Robert H. Tyndall has issued a proclamation for the week in which he states that preservation of the American home has become of greater importance than ever ' before “as anxious families await the return of men from the fighting fronts." Mayor Tyndall reiterates the theme “Do It Yourself’ and appeals for a cleaning-up of all premises, removal of accumulated trash and rubbish, yard beautification and planting of Victory gardens. He urges that paper, tin can and other salvage be sent to the proper places, and trash prepared for city collectors. With fire prevention as a major aim of Clean-Up Week, the committee calls attention to the fact that fire loss in Indianapolis thus far in 1945 has exceeded the total loss for 1944.

' Luther Tex, street commissioner, has announced that city trucks will make special collections starting Saturday, April 14. Trash should be placed in containers which the men can handle, and twigs and branches should be securely tied in small bundles for handling. Meanwhile the regular tin can collection will be in progress during Clean-Up Week. Owners of vacant lots are urged to offer their lots for Victory gardens. Mr. Tex also calls the public’s attention to the ordinance which provides that the city will go out and cut weeds on any vacant lot on which a valid complaint is made, assessing a $3.00 charge against the owner. Last year, he said, the city cut 256 lots.
