Campaign Begins To Alleviate Medical Shortage With an appeal to every citizen of Indiana to assist Women’s Army Corps recruiting staffs, Gov. Ralph F. Gates issued a proclamation today officially opening an intensive Hoosier campaign to procure women who will serve in army general hospitals in technical and administrative capacities to alleviate the present shortage of medical personnel. Capt Louis C. Wolf, Indiana WAC recruiting commander, explaining the drive for hospital units said that recruits may request duty at Wakeman General Hospital at Camp Atterbury, Billings General Hospital, Harmon or Beaumont General Hospitals both in Texas. Indiana’s quota is a total of 12 platoons to be distributed among the four hospitals. Women will also be enlisted to serve any of the other 60 general hospitals by special arrangement with the surgeon general’s department.
“Indiana units will be trained together and will serve together in hospital companies and in many cases they will be administering to Hoosier veterans,” the captain said. “The acute shortage of nurses and the increasing number of casualties necessitate these urgent measures to recruit and rapidly train women for service in army hospitals.” Women enlisting fqr the medical corps must be between the ages of 20 and 49, have no dependent children under 14 years of age, and they must have completed two years of high school or the equivalent in a trade or vocational school. The recruit is sent to Fort Des. Moines, lowa for six weeks of basic training and upon completion of basic is sent to the medical technicians school at Camp Atterbury. Training as a medical, surgical, X-ray or dental technician takes approximately four months. After graduation from one of the courses, the private is promoted to the rank of technician fifth grade and assigned to a general hospital. Women who meet the qualifications may apply for enlistment at the nearest Army Recruiting Office. .

Homes Needed For War Workers . Houses for war workers coming to the city to fill the gaps in our war plants are urgently needed, Mrs. Carl Manthei, director of Homes Registry, 120 Monument Circle, said today. “During the past month our greatest number of applications has been from immigrant war workers,” she said, “and we simply have not had enough places to refer them to. For the most part they own their furniture and have one or two children. They want an unfurnished house and will have to have one if they stay and fill the job on which they are so badly needed.”
Almost 250 of the 680 applicants who appealed to Homes Registry for dwelling units during January have been war workers. Out of this number only 173 families have been able to find satisfactory living quarters. “We have no difficulty in finding rooms for people who want them,” Mrs. Manthei said. “During the month we had almost 100 applicants, chiefly military men or their families who were here for a short time, and we were able to place all of them at once. “Unfurnished houses are in greatest demand. We urge anyone who has property available—particularly anyone who is willing to rent to families. with children, to list the house with us. In that way we can be sure that the families eligible for housing have access to it.”
While there has been an increase in listings—about 80 more houses in January than in December—there still is a great need. “So long as the boys who come back from battle say they did not have enough ammunition, we at home are going to have to do all we can to see that production of war goods Helping find housing is one way,” she said. “We urge everyone with property for rent to list it with us. Li. 7365. There is no charge for owner or tenant.” Comparatively Speaking Bill—Can you imagine anything more painful than a giraffe with a sore throat? Joe—Sure. A centipede with ingrowing toenails!
