Hoosiers Can Be Proud of War Bond Record t Indiana iisecond only to Delaware and leads all industrial states in the nation in percentage of workers purchasing war bonds through payroll savings in stores, offices and factories, Eber M. Spence, state chairman of the War Finance Committee’s payroll savings division, announced today. Records show that 840,000 or 82.1 per cent of all employed Hoosiers are investing an average of $23.68 in war bonds each month. The $23.68 represents 10.8 per cent of tojal payrolls. In the nation, the average is $20.71, or 9.5 per cent, Mr. Spence said. “Hoosiers can be proud of this record,” the chairman said. “Payroll savings is the backbone of the nation’s war savings and the money saved by workers now will be the most important purchasing potential after the war is over and civilian goods are again manufactured.” Charles E. Hoover, executive manager of the payroll savings division, announced that all Indiana employers are being asked to report payroll savings totals

in order to keep the state at the top. “Indiana’s success in this important phase of war savings is due to the time and energy donated by volunteer workers in the division and their close cooperation with employee-manage-ment groups in all types of industry,” said Mr. Hoover. “Hundreds of these volunteers have served without compensation since Pearl Harbor and are ready to carry on to the finish.” WOMEN’S COUNCIL The Women’s Council of Speedway Christian Church will meet at the chinch Jan. 24, from 11:30 to 2:30, for a birthday luncheon. SCHOOMIEWS A group of 14 students from the high school chorus are rehearsing a program which will be presented at the next Lions Club meeting. Familiar tunes from Sigmund Romberg, Victor Herbert, and Irving Berlin will be featured. Charles Brockman and James Nay will also appear at the next meeting of the Lions Club. These boys are both members of the high school debate club. Charles Brockman will take the affirmative and Jamls take the negative on the year’s liigh school debate topic which is “Lowering the Voting Age to 18.”
The second semester of the school year will be underway next Monday morning. A new teacher has been added to 'the faculty effective with the beginning of the new semester. Miss Hester Bland who taught in the Sullivan schools for 12 years will teach classes in girls’ physical education and social studies. Miss Bland has done approximately five years’ college work and holds a B.S. degree from Indiana State Teachers College. The ' fifth grade classes are drawing two large murals nine feet in length. They are showing scenes from an 18 th century ball. Authentic costumes will be shown in the pictures. Speedway will play Ben Davis in the County Tournament tonight at the Butler Fieldhouse. Ben Davis defeated Speedway 35-19 in a recent game at Ben Davis. The rivalry between the schools is very intense and past scores are seldom a good indication of what will happen in a tournament.
The members of the junior class went to Shortridge High School Tuesday afternoon where they were given X-ray examinations for tuberculosis. George Bush and Dr. Dodds of Purdue University visited the Speedway school Tuesday afternoon. These men are making a preliminary survey of the facilities of the Speedway schools and will make recommendations for additional building facilities to the school board. The Debate Club is planning to enter a debate tournament at Rushville High School in the near future. School will be dismissed for the usual two-day Easter vacation. School will not he in session on Good Friday or on the following Monday. The senior dance has been scheduled for March 16 and the senior class play is April 27. The baccalaureate will be May 20 and the commencement will be May 22. School will close May 25.

Call his parents or Mrs. Huber for his new address. Mrs. J. T. Huber, Be. 1945-M. Dear Mom and Dad: At last the crew of the Pennsylvania has been given permission to write about the previous operation. I guess by now you know as much as I do. The big “P” as you already know has been to the Philippines and as-' sisted in killing a few more Japs. This last operation has been the most difficult, but best and most enjoyable, we have ever been in. You may think I am nuts but the best morale builder for the entire crew is the, bombarding of an island and shooting down more Jap planes because it means, we come home sooner.
Most of our action took place in Leyte Gulf. It was a hazardous place to be in, because of all the islands. 'Die Japs were upon us before detected, because they used the islands as a cover. After bombarding the island of Leyte we started patrolling the area just in case they did show up with surface craft. % We soon got word of approaching enemy surface craft the afternoon of the day before the battle. All preparation was made and about 3:30 in the morning “Go” was sounded. A battle line was formed across the inner end of the strait. The firing started around 5 a. m., I don’t know the exact time. It lasted for about 30 minutes'at the most. The days that followed we were credited with ten planes shot down. We sustained no casualties on board the Penn. I was honored by being one who helped bury a mate in Leyte Gulf. The other day while eating chow, a mate said we had a Christmas tree on the quarter deck starboard side, so I went aft to see it, there it was standing on a vent. Not the kind we had at home. The petals would not fall off this tree, it was made of plywood painted green. A mate of mine while fishing had a strike and caught one, while pulling in his long line another fish struck, a larger fish bit it off all but the

head. I went fishing yesterday afternoon, on Christinas Day, no luck, no fish but I had plenty of time -to think of home. George caught some fish today about 16 inches long. After frying than he wrapped one up and gave it to me. Guess it was meant Christmas present The fish was very good even if he did forget to put salt on before frying. I started eating it immediately. George helped eat it too. I have been fishing with some line used for packing, so I am asking you, Dad, to send me some saltwater line, some steel leaders and some hooks a little larger than what you use. So long for now. TRANSIT SYSTEM ORDERS 25 NEW MOTOR COACHES “As a Christmas present to the citizens of Indianapolis,” Indianapolis Railways announced on Dec. 25 that authority had beeh secured from the Office of Defense Transportation at Washington, D. C., to obtain 25 new motor coaches for use in tne Hoosier capital. As all transit riders know, this new equipment is greatly needed because of the burdensome use to which the vehicles of the system have been placed since war was declared. Orders for the 25 buses have been placed with the manufacturers, and delivery is promised just as soon as construction can be completed. The new buses, when delivered, will be the largest ever used in Indianapolis. Fifteen will seat 40 passengers, and ten will have a seated load of 41. Although these buses are larger in capacity, due to the use of recently developed metals, the overall weight is considerably less than present equipment of similar design. A modern feature of this new equipment is the fact that all 25 buses are equipped with automatic clutches. This does away with gear shifting. It improves the ease of operation to the driver and also provides a smoother ride for the passenger. Although frequent attempts have ‘been made by Indianapolis Railways to secure new vehicles, this is the first time that Government approval has been successfully secured since May, 1942. Previous attempts of the transit firm to obtain new vehicles were turned down by the Government because “the situation in Indianapolis was not serious enough.”
