W. I. Longsworth, chairman, and Mrs. G. D. French, chairman of the nurses procurement and assignment division, Indianapolis chapter of the American Red Cross, joined today in an urgent appeal for aid in enlistment of graduate nurses for the Army Nurses Corps. Their appeal asked employes in industrial plants in the Indianapolis area, comprising 18 counties, including Marion County, to act as recruiters for nurses. Young Pianist To Appear With Local Symphony
Soloist for the sixth pair of concerts to be given by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in the Murat Theater on Saturday, Jan. 20, at 8:30 p. m., and Sunday, Jan. 21, at 3 p. m., will be WilHam Kapell, 21-year-old pianist 'and youngest winner of the New I York Town Hall endowment | series award. Mr. Kapell has won I recognition for his especially brilliant interpretations of the works of modern composers and likes to play Russian music. He will play the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 for his first appearance in Indianapolis. “In my own playing,” says Kapell, “there are two things I strive to achieve—first, a beautiful singing tone; second, to get at the bottom of what the composer meant when he wrote the music.”
Mr. Kapell is a native of New York and has studied at Juilli&d and at the Philadelphia Conservatory. He was a pupil of Olga Samaroff Stowkowski. The Philadelphia orchestra has broken all precedent in signing young Kapell for a three-year contract as soloist Other compositions to be conducted by Fabien Sevitzky will be the Saint-Saens Symphony No. 3, Moyen Age Suite by Glazounov, and the Handel-Sevitzky Concerto for Strings. Tickets are now available at the orchestra's box offices in the Murat Theater and the record department of H. P. Wasson and Co.
