Freedom Road by Howard Fast Reviewed by Mildred Good “Freedom Road” is a book that makes people question history. It is the unknown side of the reconstruction of the South. It is the tragedy of Gideon Jackson and his work. When in 1868 tlideon Jackson was elected by the people of the Carwell District to represent them in the convention that would frame a new constitution for the state of South Carolina, he was but a few years out of slavery. He scarcely knew what freedom and voting were, and he could barely write his name. He wore Brother Peter’s old frock coat; Trooper’s old stovepipe hat, a little crushed; and in his pocket' was the calico handkerchief Rachel had sewed. He walked the 200 miles to Charleston. At Charleston, unlearned black men like Gideon, poor white men like Anderson Clay, and brilliant, educated black men like Francis Cardozo set thoughtfully to work to frame a constitution. They wanted a document that give white men and black men an equal chance for learning and a decent life. Within the convention, Gideon, who his first day in town had been too fearful to go to the meeting, was soon recognized as a leader. He taught himself to read and to speak correct English. He acquired a 'few books. He did much thinking. Back at Carwell Gideon saw that if his people were to live, they must have land. He persuaded the men to work on the causeway the railroad was building across the swamp. They accumulated a > thousand dollars. This money was to be used towards the purchase of some of the land of the old Carwell Plantation, which would be sold for taxes. Gideon journeyed clear Boston to borrow the rest of the necessary money. It was he who persuaded the poor white men like Abner Lait come into the project
For eight years the community prospered. There was a church. There was a school where black children and white children were taught-together. There were neat clean cabins. White men and black men worked side by side to the benefit of each. There was no inter-marriage. During this period Gideon sat, first, in the state and then in the national congress. He was a thoughful, well read and a respected man. During this time a group of ruined aristicrats in South Carolina plotted to revive the Ku Klux Klan and wrest from the black man his chance for a (Recent life.
In 1877 Rutherford B. Hayes wanted to be President. For one vote he agreed to remove Union troops from the South. Then the Klan struck. The struggle was*'short. The Carwell people took refuge in the old plantation house. Gideon was killed. His sons were murdered in cold blood. His people were exterminated. All record of the Carwell experiment and others like it, where men of two races lived peacefully together, were destroyed. The world was never allowed to know that white men and black men once worked together in equality and democracy. In 1944 Howard Fast wrote “Freedom Road” and set his readers to wondering if they had been told the whole truth about the reconstruction. Teacher: “Children, there will be only a half-day of school this morning.” Johnny in back seat: “Whoopee! Hurray!” Teacher: “Silence. We’ll have the other half this afternoon.” — Boy’s Life. A big shot is not necessarily a man of big calibre.

Dogs Needed By Marine Corps '' t THE APPEAL IS URGENT The Marine Corps has made an urgent appeal for the loan of 150 additional Doberman pinscher and 'German shepherd dogs, whose value has been proven in numerous engagements with the Japanese, Commissioned Warrant Officer Anthony Morello, officer in charge of Marine Corps induction and recruiting in Indiana, announced here today. The request from Marine Corps Headquarters, to dog owners east of the Mississippi River only, said the animals, between one and four years old, are needed by Jan. 31, 1945. Each dog should be about 27 inches high and weigh 70 pounds, be of dean blood lines, healthy and agressive but not vicious.
Inquiries should be directed to Dogs for pefense, Inc., 22 E. 60th St., New York, N. Y. The dogs will t>e trained primarily for scout duty, Marine Headquarters said, although they may sometimes be called upon to guide first aid units to helpless and hidden Marine wounded, or to carry ammunition. Rex is one war dog who has received a commendation for bravery during recent fighting on Peleliu. He was on sentry duty one night with his two handlers. Their job—to prevent Japs from sneaking back into a blockhouse which had been captured during the day. Once during the night Rex became uneasy, and growled. His handlers, alert, saw two Japs. They killed one, wounded the other. Blitzkreig, another war dog on Peleliu, has been commended for several times disclosing the presence of energy troops and machine gun units. At one stretch, he worked six days and nights with little rest. Boy, a Doberman pinscher, detected an ambush of 20 heavily armed Japs on Peleliu in time for the Marines to wipe them Out. Only male dogs now are accepted by the Marine Corps.
