A CHRISTMAS
Road March! A road march is an endurance test, so that the officers can tell how long it takes to wear a man’s legs off up to his knees. You are usually warned the day before the march so you will go to bed and get a good night’s rest. When you stagger in at 4 a. m. you have one hour to get your equipment ready and one hour to sleep. The first sergeant finally throws you out of bed on the floor and after a few kicks, you doggedly crawl to a sitting position on the side of your bunk. You feel that you’d rather let the enemy kill you dumb instead of being trained first. You know there’s no use griping, so you reach up and grab the side of your head and squeeze it down to normal size. Breakfast you wisely forget but you approach your pack, •however, with sad apprehension. A blanket roll fitted, in horseshoe shape, around your field bag which is snapped to suspenders that are held in place by a cartridge belt looks innocent enough hanging there on a nail, but a foreboding comes over you when you lift it off and it thumps to the floor yanking your arm out of place. With grunting, sweating, and cussing you get the entangled

A mile breaks over your face, yc : chest swells a little, yc scream out, “Look, fellas, I d it” This startles the sergeant i he saunters down to look at : x You think you have pleased *n because he is smiling, too. You did it all right” says the rgeant,” but the field manual s s your gas mask goes on first" 'ou fall back on your bunk an start blubbering hysterically yourself. Finally ame of your buddies insert yc lashings and wrappings. As r you have your leggings on t kwards several times, you final get them on right Your heir :t will slide forward and bounc off your nose before you can g t the strap fastened, and you s uld plan on several bumps fre trying to get your rifle slung rrectly. Now all you have to de s walk 25 miles. You star t route step, so some' fool starts aging to keep up the morale. Y didn’t have any morale to s rt with so how can

• it be kept up? An officer walks up beside you and you’re singing louder than anyone. On and on, on and on you walk and walk. After the first thousand miles they fall you out for a break. Everyone scampers into the ditch beside the road but not you—you collapse right where you were halted. If you had a breath left in you, you could suck on a cigarette. Finally you get a breath, but before you can get the cigarette lit, you’re told to fall back in and are walking down the road with a wistful expression on your face. Noon snails around and you fall out where the field kitchen has been set up. A rumor goes the rounds that we are eating rabbit, but you wonder a little when the skelton of a cat drifts into view as you are lifting the first bite to your mouth. Under way again your feet begin to hurt, but you go onward grinding them to a pulp. Over hill, through valley, until you lose all consciousness. As the radiant sun begins to sink in the west you begin to sink in the ground. Someone starts singing, “Home Sweet Home,” and you regain your sense long enough to see your barracks looming up in the dusk forming a silhouette against the early moon. Some of the men-are going out on pass, but you plop in a .heap on your bunk and dream of the yellow Ford roadster you left at home. Written by George Scholl.
