“Messiah” To Be Sung Wednesday The great oratorio, “Messiah,” by George Frederick Handel, contains many of the most famous religious songs in the world, for solo voices or for choruses. The “Messiah” will be presented in Indianapolis as the Symphony orchestra’s second municipal concert, with four local soloists and a chorus of 300 voices at 8 p. m. on Dec. 20 in Cadle Tabernacle.

Perhaps most famous in the “Messiah” music is the Hallelujah chorus, during the singing of which it is customary for audiences to rise in tribute. Three of the best known arias for soprano, which will be sung by Maria Koussevitzky are “I know that my Redeemer liveth,” “There were shepherds in the fields” and “And, lo! the angel of the Lord.” Edna Merritt, contralto, will sing two arias familiar to everyone, “He was despised” and “He shall feed His flock”; the most famous aria for John MacDonald, baritone is “The trumpet shall sound” and William Hane, tenor, has, among other famous arias “Comfort ye my people” and “Every valley shall be exalted.” Many of Isaiah’s well known forecasts will find expression in music here, as when the chorus “For unto us a Child is born” interweaves with beautiful violin passages and is punctuated with announcements of the name “Messiah” in full choral power. Tickets for the “Messiah” are available either at the orchestra’s office in the Murat or in the record department of the H. F. Wasson & Company, the Monument Place store.

Jordan To Give Concert Friday More than 1600 friends of music will attend the Indiana premier of Gabriel Pierne’s oratorio, “The Children of Bethlehem,” at 8:30 o’clock, Friday night at Caleb Mills Hall. Victor Kolar will conduct an orchestra of 75, a chorus of 150 especially rehearsed by Joseph Lautner, and 10 principal characters. Edward Ferrell, tenor, and Mary Ann Davis, soprano, have been added to the cast. “Every reserved seat has been given away as well as all available room,” Mr. Norris announces. “We sincerely ask that everyone be seated by 8:30 o’clock the night of the concert, as the first part of the oratorio requires about 40 minutes and nobody will be seated until after the first part.” Mr. Kolar placed his orchestra and the chorus in the first re-
