Suicide Mission: Assault Engineers in First, Cleared Out Defenses Under Fire
Extract from “Stars and Stripes,” June 7, 1944 edition. By LIONEL SHAPIRO Representing Combined Press. SOMEWHERE IN FRANCE, June 7 (Delayed)—While Allied forces are pushing into France, confounding the German defenders on almost every sector, some heroes of this campaign are resting in the field. They are the assault engineers, the men who cleared the beach fortifications long before our infantry forces swarmed from their landing craft. This morning I saw these assault engineers. They were weary men, their eyes still bloodshot, their nerves frayed and no wonder. In the early desperate hours before they faced greater dangers than the average soldier undergoes in the entire war. To them was given the job of moving into the beach long in advance of the zero hour, in order to remove underwater mines and clear a path for the assault craft and sweep the beach strips clear of mines. All this had to be done under the eyes of the German defenders in their pillboxes and while our naval forces were bombarding the same beaches which they were clearing.
PATCHWORK QUILT Quaint little lady of the patchwork quilt. As she sits in her easy chair Adding the last of her patches of print With stitches so dainty, and as rare. As her silvery hair and her placid sweet smile, And it seems, almost, as I look That I see in her quilt exactly the things One would read in an open book. Her quilt is her life with its varied hues, She begun it when a child of ten; And the bits of cloth she has added there Shows just what her life has been. The bright gay colors are symbols you see Of glorious sunshiny days When she had gardens of flowers and everything gay And the spirit of it always stays. No, she never tells much of the toil and the strife But never doubt for one moment, my dears, That Grandma had days full to the brim Of heartache, and she has shed tears.
There’s the candy stripe shirt worn by Tommy, He was a loveable, gay little tad; God alone knew the anguish she shared with Grandpa But they treasured the —loan—of the lad! The day that he fell and was pinned underneath The wheels of a fast flying coach, The driver was stricken with remorse at his death But from them—not one word of reproach,

“It was the toughest job we’ve ever had,” one of them told me. “Some of our plans went just as scheduled and others all went screwy. For instance, we were a little late getting in and the water was higher than we expected. We had to work with water up to our necks, sometimes higher. “Then there were the snipers. They were nipping us off as I was working with two others on a tough bit of element, when suddenly I found myself working alone. My two pals just gurgled and disappeared under water.” The men didn’t say much about, their comrades who fell. But evidence of what the assault engineers went through was visible on the beach of this town. Theirs was a suicide mission. How well they accomplished their task may be measured by the success of the great assault which has completely smashed the Atlantic wall on this sector.
Max S. Norris, surgical technician, was one of the assault engineers in this group. He graduated from School Nb. 58, at Linwood and E. New York street, was a graduate of Arsenal Technical High School and Butler University .. . also attended I. U. Medical School.
When'Grandpa was called Home she justfelt He was mOue'ready than she To start on that wonderful journey So she —is just waiting—you see! Each piece in her quilt was placed there when new, Each has a story so dear; I see as she gazes that some bring a smile While others call forth—a tear. The pieces of dresses she wore as a child, Then later when she dressed as a bride; When life was so lovely with youth holding sway And a young husband there at her side.
The tiny wee patches of both pink and blue Each brighter it seems, by the year. She can tell you each one with pride in her voice You don’t see—her eye holds a tear! Grandpa’s fine Sunday shirt lost a piece it is true Where it never was noticed, you see, For it had to go into the patchwork quilt To make it complete—said she.
You note as she tells you and proudly points out That her eyes invariably go To the patches of print with the gayest of tint And the story is not one of woe. But rather to things pertaining to fun When the children were happy and gay, She never enjoys repeating, my dears; The tale of an unpleasant day! —Anna E. Young.
