INFANTRY IS WINNING WAR. DECLARBMARINE “It’s just the boys in the'infantry, just the boys carrying the rifles that are winning this war,” jays Corp. Harry Kraus, furloughbed' Marine just back from 24 months overseas. He has seen duty in Samba, the Hawaiian Islands, the Marshall Islands, and he has faced death more than he’d care to recall. As an example, he and the other members of his tank crew were assigned to T-e- - tank in distress, s black, but with r lighted, this crew nack into the Jap their assignment, they werenot fired ute they attempted a return to their lines, mortar fire followed them incessantly. While on Eniwetok, another of his not-too-safe assignments included the recovery of a tank that, having caught on fire, rode in the ocean to douse the flames. Even, his recent furlough is the result of his contraction of a tropical ailment; after a five-week treatment course at the Guadalcanal hospital, he was sent home on a hospital ship. Corp. Kraus has been in tne service for two and a half years. Though he’s seen much of the Pacific islands he quite staunchly declares, “I wouldn’t trade all the coconuts and moonlight in the Pacific for life at home.” • Some of the Samoan native girls are real beauties according to Corp. Kraus; a number of the half-caste girls have been offered Hollywood contracts, yet nothing ever help them toward a screenland career. Samoa itself is an “OK place,” states Kraus, if one overlooks the, fact that the charge like tne devil for laundfy. Mail-service was poor for the Marine company; they moved rapidly and often, that the postal service had a difficult time following them. Often when they were reached, each man in the company received as many as 25 letters ab once; they rejoiced and called theSe days “mail holidays.” Often the “K” rations were too meagre for the Marines, apd to solve their problem, a gloup of them would take a rub-> ber reconnaisance boat equipped with an outboard motor ahd go

fishing./They would use small TNT charges to stun a number of fish underwater, and dive into the water to secure them.

In Corp. Kraus’ opinion, the American people as a whole are apt to underestimate the Jap enemy. “They’re not superior fighters when you can get at them, but you can’t find them,” he says. When asked what he missed most in the service, he said, “Good old home cooking.” Just the Same Joan What’s the difference between a beautician and a cop? Jane—Okay, I give up. What’s the difference?
