ST. CHRISTOPHER’S CATHOLIC CHURCH Rev. L. A. Lindemann Pastor Sunday Masses: 6:00 o’clock Weekday Masses 7:00 o’clock The men of St. Christopher will receive Holy Communion at the 8:30 o’clock Mass Sunday—on the Feast day of the Transfiguration of our Lord. The Men’s Club held their regular monthly meeting on Wednesday evening of this week in the Parish Hall. The meeting was announced at all the Masses on Sunday and a request was made for a large attendance as the part of the men of the Parish will play in the Summer Festival to be held August 24th, 25th and 26th was to be discussed. The regular meeting of the Altar Society will be held next Wednesday evening in the Social Room. Mrs. Herbert Grande, President of the Society, is hoping a great number of ladies will attend, as final plans for the Festival will be discussed and made. The hostesses for the evening are Chairman, Mrs. Bruce Atkinson, Co-Chairman Mrs. Al Aulbach, assisted by Mesdames Catherine Baldwin, J. W. Basch, Elizabeth Beberdick, Juanita Bender, L. Benedetto, Josephine Waldon, Jane Watson, Viola Whelan, Maxine ThurSbay, Clara Rausch, Rosemary Thompson and Dorothy Unnewehr. Next Monday, August 7th, is the time St. Christopher’s ladies are to report at St. Vincent’s I ospital between 9 and 12 and 2t05 to make surgical dressings. More ladies are needed. If you can go, please contact Mrs. Herbert Grande, President, Mrs. Raymond Vurpillat, Secretary, Nora Bray, after seven of evenings, or advise Father Lindemann. OLD HOME WEEK IN THE JUNGLES OF INDIA “Hi Ya Sis: “What really prompted me to write you so soon again was that I met an old friend of yours and mine this morning—none other than Bob Mugg. I know you remember him. His home is across the street from Miss Spencer’s. “I was sitting in a weapons carrier just getting ready to come to my base and up walks Muggs to ask the driver a question. At first I didn’t think L was sure about his identity. Then he saw me and both of us just about went wild—it all goes to show you that this is a small world after all. “Bob has been out in Burma for eight months fighting with the Chinese forces and he has had no easy time of it. He is on his first rest leave now. A whole month of some of the finer things that he has been missing out on. I gave him a fresh carton of cigarettes to tide him over till he gets to where he’s going. I hope they

Lad ies Needed To Help Make Surgical Dressings Ladies of St. Christophers, we have been asked to help wrap surgical dressings at St. Vincent’s Hospital this coming Monday, Aug. 7th. Several ladies have volunteered, but we need several more. All those who can help either morning, afternoon or ass "day will be doing a very necessary work. So, we say, “Boys, have a grand time while you are here.” Last Monday evening, July 24th, Bob Schowalter met Steele Roberts, Jr., in San Francisco. Bob says Steele never did look so good! These boys are graduates of the class of 1943 so they decided to visit some more Speed-way-ites and taxied out to the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Bland. Don’t you imagine the Army, the Navy, and the “Sea Bees” had a grand time? Mrs. Melson tells us she has received a letter from Frank and he is in Sardinia. Frank is a radio operator and gunner on a Marauder bomber. He and the crew flew their ship over. They had a grand hop and saw some very interesting and beautiful country and plenty of the Atlantic. We have his new address now. The family of Harvey Phipps, Jr., and Miss Dot Gleason received three letters and a card from Harvey last week, saying he was well and that his crew of ten had. parachuted to safety and not to worry about him as the Red Cross was taking good care of them. Harvey is the catcher on their ball team. \ Mr. N. D. Richardson of 4936 West 12th Street, received a telegram from the War Department stating that Bob has been missing since July 19th, during a flight over Germany. Bob was inducted in August of 1943, receiving his training in Jefferson Barracks, Mo., Las Vegas, Nev., and Tampa, Fla. Bob has only been overseas a few weeks. Rev. Anderson received letters during the past week from Wayne Senter, Dwight Bilbee, Jr., and Bob Penn. All of these boys are „wcll and they all send their best wishes to everyone in (Speedway. —— "f~ War Mothers Organization Close Busy Month 7 —<fhe U(S. A. Chapter American War Mothers ended the busy month of July by sponsoring the band concert given at Garfield Park last Sunday evening by the 667th AAF band from Stout Field, under the direction of Warrant Officer John G. Doyle. A basket picnic was held in the afternoon by the chapter members, and the band members and their wiye§_ .were guests at the supper The committee in charge was Mrs. A. L. Wottring, Mrs. Ralph Fisher, Mrs. C. L. McMurray, Mrs. Ray Trefz, Mrs. Fred Myers, Mrs. R. B. Bailey. The guest table was beautifully decorated an<f laden with food prepared by the committee and chapter mothers. The service men and their wives expressed their thanks for what they said was a grand time. .Mrs. H. F. Bernhardt was in charge of the Red Cross Blood Bank booth that the U. S. A. Speedway Flyer Vacation Dates. The Speedway FLYER will be on its vacation August 18th and 25th. We wjlljjublish a paper next Friday, August 11th, and we will resume our paper Friday, September Ist. We are sorry to have to miss two issues of the paper but under all circumstances it has seemed the most advisable thing to do.

Miss Patty Monee has returned from Hanlmond, Indiana, where she visited her uncle, . C. Wilkins, and family. She was accompanied home by Mr. Bill Wilkins of Brazil, who spent last week with the H. R. Monces’. He returned to Brazil Sunday afternoon with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Theo Wilkins, who have been visiting their daughter, Mrs. Monee, and family, for the past two weeks. Mrs. Minnie Schenck and Margie Lou have gone to Tujunga, California, to visit Mrs. C. D. Huff and daughter, Ddrothy. Mrs. Margaret Kelley accompanied her sister as far as Chicago. Mr. and Mrs. Otto Heuser and Mr. and Mrs. Fre4 Green and children have been-'spending the week at Lake Shafer. * ♦ • Mr. and Mrs. Charles Armstrong and daughter, Joyce, spent the week-end with relatives in Deerfield, Indiana. SIHOOLNEWS Speedway schools will reopen Tuesday, September sth. Students will come the first day at 8:20 a. m. There will be a short schedule of classes the first day. • ♦ • The Speedway School Board has reorganized for the coming year as follows: Robert L. Thomas, president; Robert J. Kry ter, treasurer, and Erwin H. Hamke, secretary. ♦ ♦ * Plans a:-e being completed for the£feomir z school term and the list of tellers for the coming year will be announced in the Flyer next week. Plans for the kindergarten are going forward and enrollments for the k: idergarten will be accepted after August 14th. There will be two kindergartens, one meeting in the morning and the other in the afternoon. The Higbie family entertained one of Earl’s buddies who is back from the fighting front of Italy, Captain Noel Kitchen. Captain Kitchen is a fighter pilot with several Nazi planes to his credit. Hazlewood, Jr. is spending a two weeks furlough with his wife and parents at 5027 West 13th Street. * * * Mrs. Dora Watson of Huntington, Indiana, is visiting with her daughter, Mrs. C. C. M .Church School (For young people and adults this is a unified service of study and worship) The services of worship will be conducted by members of the congregation during the month of August. Mr. Hamilton Powell will preside during church services next Sunday morning. The sermon will be preached by Mr. N. D. Cory, Supt. of the Speedway Schools. HiS subject will be “The Man of The Future”. Mrs. Claude Westenhofer will sing the communion hymn and Miss oyce Armstrong will be the guest organist. The attendance at our unified services duping the summer months has been outstanding. There were 435 people present last Sunday morning. Once more we issue an invitation to anyone in Speedway, who is not attending church elsewhere, to come to our services for the Christian education and expression of worship which is needed so much during these days. If you are new in the community and a stranger to this church, we assure you a sincere welcome. Our ushering committee will greet you at the door and guide you and your children to the proper classes of the church school. Our courteous welcoming committee will see to it that you are a stranger but once. Church school classes for the children are conducted each Sunday morning during the time that the young people and adults are in their study and worship groups. The quarterly meeting of the church board will be held Tuesday evening, August Bth, at Buckley’s in Cumberland. A fried chicken dinner will be served at seven o’clock. Following dinner the business meeting will be held. Board members should contact Mr. Wood or Mr. Norman to arrange for transportation. The Children’s Story Hour will meet each Friday morning during August with the exception of August 18th. The time of the story hour is nine-thirty o’clock. Four new members of the church were welcomed into the fellowship of the congregation last Sunday morning. Mr. Karl Degener, Mr. Robert Parke, Miss. Cary lon Bennett and Miss Ruth Gerber are the new members. Our minister and family are on vacation during this month. The church office will be open each morning excepting Saturdays. Mrs. Helen Thomas Martin is attending the Church and Choral Music Institute at Northwestern University. This institute is held each summer to give advanced instruction to choir directors. Mrs. Martin will return to Speedway for church services on August 13th, and will begin her vacation August 14th.
I Speedway Girl Enrolled In Radio School Feminine Bluejacket Mary J. Riley, 20, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Riley, 1653 Winton Avenue, Indianapolis, was enrolled recently in the Naval Training School (radio) at Miami University, Ohio, where she is learning fundamentals of radio communication. Her selection to the specialty school was m(ide on the results of her recruit training aptitude tests.
