St. Christophers Catholic Church Rev. L. A. Lindemann Pastor Sunday Masses: 6:00 o’clock Weekday Masses The first Sunday in the month is the usual Men’s Communion Sunday at St. Christopher, but this month will be the exception. They will receive Holy Communioh at the 8:30 o’clock Mass on March 12th—and their Communion Breakfast will follow the Mass. J v ' An appeal from the Red Cross for funds was read at all the Masses Sunday. We all know the good the Red Cross is during this War, and at home during times of disaster, and the large amount of money it is necessary that they have, so that very little urging or selling will be necessary that they have everyone give generously to this worthy cause during their drive m this month of March. Remember your Red Cross will always be at his or her side. A ' There will be a substitute'priest at St. Christopher Sunday, due to the absence of Father Lindemann, who will be away serving at a first Mass of the last of one of five boys whom he helped to prepare themselves for the Holy Priesthood. The regular meeting of the Altar Society will be held next Wednesday, March 8, in the Social Hall, immediately following services. Because of Lent, there will be no hostesses flor this meeting. However, in keeping with St. Patrick’s day the following week. Miss Catherine Medenwald will entertain with some Irish tunes. She will do the now popular tune, “You re Irish and You re Beautiful” and “Who Threw the Overalls in Mrs. Murphy s Chowder ” She will also play and sing some otjier popular numbers. There will be no fast and abstinence on the Ember Days— Wednesday, Friday and Saturday of this week; dispensation having been granted by our most Reverend Bishop because of the War. Everyone who possibly can should attend both the evening Lenten services at St. Christopher on Wednesday and Frittey eveings at 7:30 o’clock. On Wednesday, Father Lindemann delivers the sermon, followed by Benediction, and on Fridays, the Way or the Cross is followed by Benediction. Everyone is urged to say the Rosary daily, and wherever possible the family group is to recite the Rosary prayers together. “For wherever two or three are gathered for my sake, there am lin the midst of them. St. Matthew 18: 20. ' . - "Bufiday an extra collection was taken lndian Negro Missions. Unless you have travelled west, south, and north, you are not aware of how much missionary work is being done, and is yet to be done, in our own United States. During these times when so many demands are made on us to give, we might well remember from St. Luke 6:30 “Give to everyone who asks of thee, and from him who takes away thy goods, ask no return.” Nora Bray

The trustees make all appointments of regular personnel, such as Police, Firemen, members of the Zoning Board, Building Inspector and the Board of School Trustees. They also serve as trustees of the Water Works, which is owned by the town, having been purchased from the Speedway Realty Co., in 1929. (We will try to give you some interesting data on the water works at a later date). All laws, rules and regulations are made by the Board of Town Trustees, excepting those concerning the School, which is in complete command of the School Board. This Board, after appointment, operates the school independently of the

Town Board. The Marshal and Deputy Marshals are appointed, and hold office until released by the Board, o* resign. There are four regular men in this department, an average of one to every one thousand citizens, which is far beyond the average. The department has all modern equipment, including a radio tuned only to police calls. There are two regular firemen and twenty volunteers. One regu lar fireman is on duty at all times. It is their responsibility to answer and give all alarms, care for the apparatus and building. The volunteers are a group of men who, although they work for nothing, are always ready and willing to devote their time and efforts to the safety of the town. They, above all, deserve a vote of thanks from every citizen of Speedway. The building inspector checks all plans and specifications for all types of buildings. He is well informed as to what can and what can not be built or remodeled according to the building code. If he approves the plans the clerk issues a permit. Much credit is due this department for keeping Speedway free of undesirable buildings. The Zoning Board is made up of nine members, three from each ward. Their services are donated and their duties are to hear and act upon, as advisors, all petitions for variations from the Zoning Ordinance. The Zoning Ordinance controls the lay-out* of the town in regard to business, residential and industrial locations. Were it not for the strict enforcement of this ordinance, you might find a junkveard in the vacant lot just down the street from your home. The Town last year had a properly tax valuation of $13,034,640.00 Your local corporation tax for 1944 is $0.5333 on each SIOO.OO of taxable property. For example, if you own your home and it has an appraised valuation of $3500.00,. and if, as you probably do, take advantage of the SIOOO.OO exemption, your share for operating the town, (which includes street lighting, street, repair, garbage and trash re - moval, police protection, fire protection and many other services which most people somewhat take for granted) would be $13.32% for the full year. We somewhat doubt if it would be possible for you to bave your garbage disposed of for this amount. We give you these figures at this time because -there are auite a number of citizens who do not understand how their tax money is distributed, and again it

St. Andrew's Lutheran Church (Worshipping in Speedway Town Hall) Rev. Robert H. Heine, Sunday School 9:30 a. m. Morning Worship 10:45 a. m. The Second Sunday in Lent. WHAT IS FAITH? Sunday’s sermon subject will be be based on the Gospel lesson for the Second Sunday in Lent, Matthew 15: 21-28. Jesus said to the Syro-Phoenician woman, ‘O Woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt.” Sermon subject: “A Great Faith.” v. A BETTER KEPT LENT WILL MEAN A MORE BLESSED »EASTER. It means time set apart for more frequent hearing of the word of God, for a new vision of the crucified Son of God, for more confident and more frequent prayer, for increased faithfulness in the service of the Church, for bestowal to the needy of what we save by self denial. It means joy, because for us the motive of its observance is love, not necessity. We observe it out of love for Him who loved us and gave Himself for us. It means the deep abiding joy of Christ. It means the joy of knowing God better. It means the joy of sacrifice and service, of finding our life by losing it for Jesus’ sake. “I haven’t time” is heard more frequently in the twentieth century than ever before. Lent is our opportunity to make time for thg things that count most. The demands of business, pleasure money, amusements, give way; not because they are wrong in themselves, but in order that they may never become the center of our life. It is time to become rich, —toward God. OUR NEXT LENTEN STUDY HOUR will be held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Perish, 1422 Exeter avenue, Wednesday, March 15, at 8 p. m. _ THE WOMEN OF ST. ANDREW’S will meet Tuesday afternoon, March 7, at 2 p. m. at the Town Hall.
