U. S. Helping So. America Build Own Fish Industry Even the fish are doing their bit to promote the Good Neighbor policy. Finny denizens of the' Great Lakes and Potomac are winging their way southward to provide other American republics with an important new industry. For several years, according to the newspaper, the United States Bureau of Fisheries, the Division of Agricu' ural Co-operation of tho PanAmerican Union and the Venezuelan government have been working jointly to stock Andean mountain streams and lakes with trout, bass, perch, carp and other edible fish. The fish have taken so readily to their new environment that countries like Chile, Colombia and Venezuela can look forward to commercial fishing as an important new industry and a permanent source of food. Experiments began in 1933, when the Bureau of Fisheries analyzed samples of water taken from Lake Valencia in northern Venezuela and recommended stocking it with carp and catfish. Six hundred fish of both species were taken from the Potomac and other streams, but none survived the trip to Venezuela. The following year 800 black bass, carp, catfish, perch, crappies and sunfish were shipped to the South American republic by boat, train and truck. Enough reached their destination to warrant successful experimentation. Fish were bred in large enclosures built into the lake, to protect them from the voracious baba and guabina. Fry were collected, marked and released in batches of 100,000, with careful checks kept on their development. Results were so favorable that the three agencies concerned began to experiment with crook and lake trout. For several years the Bureau of Fisheries flew batches of several hundred thousand trout eggs to Venezuela each year. To these were added about 200,000 eggs a year, harvested in the South American republic.
