SALE OF LICENSE PLATES TO BEGIN JANUARY IS The sale of Auto License Plates and the various types of driving licenses will start on January 15, .1944, according to a statement made today by Rue J. Alexander, Secretary of State', and Commissioner of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. 'The customary printed applications for plates will be mailed early : in January to registrants of record in 1943. Mr. Alexander pointed out that, owing to the difficulty in obtaining material for supplies, there may be a slight delay in mailing Mnese applications, and requested Jkotorists to wait till they receive "ieir applications before purchasing Mates, even though it may be late “• January. Service will be rendthrough 150 branch offices out in the state and fifteen branches in Marion County, including the main office of the Bureau in the State House. - Motorists are reminded by Mr. 'Alexander that 1943 plates and driving licenses expire February 29. 1944, but he urges motorists toobtain plates and licenses as early as possible after January 15, in order to avoid the last minute rush the latter part of February. Mr. Alexander emphasized the provisions of the law which require that each applicant for license plate or any form of driving license must show a receipt for his 1943 personal : property- and poll taxes, or a statement from the county treasurer that such taxes have been paid or a statement from the county assessor that he is not assessable in his, county of residence . Forms for these statements will be mailed with the plate applications. They may be obtained, also, at any Auto License Branch or at the Bureau in the State House. . INCOME TAX BLANKS TO BE MAILED JANUARY 3 Will H. Smith, United States Collector of Internal Revenue for the District of Indiana, today advised that the income tax returns for the calendar year 1943 will be released on Monday, January 3, and that blank copies will be mailed, to. all taxpayers of record. Most taxpayers have already made substantial payments on their 1943 Federal tax through withholding from their wages or direct payments to the CBBlector; but nevertheless all taxpayers must file annual returns on or before March 15, 1944, as provided by law. WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME? What would we do when the world calls for men To face the battle and fight to the end, If theywould say no, not until I can see Just what I must do and what’s in it for me. Or the farmers would refuse to plant or sow Or make it possible for food to grow, And say to the world this land is now free, I’ll work when I know what’s in it for me. If your Saviour had said when He went to the cross To give up his life for a world that was lost, Why should I suffer in the smallest degree, ‘Til I see the end and what’s in it for me. ' Or our Lord should say I will surely refrain From blessing your land and sending rain, Until I .get your sure promise on bend rd knee And know just exactly what’s in it for Me. When the people all know just what lies ahead Of the death and destruction and blood to be shed, For the bravest and best of our land of the free, ■ Should we stop and ask, what’s in it for me? Should we stop the factories from turning a wheel Regardless of how urgent or needful the yield, When life is in danger on land or on sea, To quibble that question, what’s in it for me? Our fathers who sang as they fought in the past As the Red, White and Blue flew high on her mast “My Country, ‘tis of thee, sweet land of liberty”, Never stopped to ask, what’s in it for me? Such question should soften the selfish man’s pride, Who cares not who walks just so he can ride, And soldiers that perish mean to him not a thing, While he gets his share with the selfish ring. If we are to abide when the great Prince of Peace Who will rule the earth when all wars cease, We must give our all regardless of fee, For He will be judge of what’s in it for me. By R. H. WAKEMAN.
