Control Com Borer by Plowing Land for Oat* One method of controlling the Europeen "invader,** the coin borer, is to plow cornstalk land for oats, according to G. H. Dungan and W. L. Burlison of the University of Illinois college of agriculture. During the war years ahead the area devoted to oats is likely to be reduced because of greater needs tor oil crops and heavier yielding grain, but the oat crop will continue to be advantageous to com-belt farmers because it possesses high feeding value and requires only a small amount of labor. For success with this crop, an adapted high-yielding variety should be chosen and the seed may be sown moderately early, preferably with a drill. The rate of seeding may be adjusted to the method used. If seeding is done with a drill, eight pecks should be used to the acre. If broadcast,.lo pecks an acre will* give the best results. When a legume is seeded in the oats, the best rate is six pecks an acre if oats are drilled and eight pecks if broadcast. The ripened crop may be harvested with a binder and threshed with a Tegular small-grain s operator or it may be harvested with a windrower followed with a pick-up combine when the grain is dry enough to bin. Oats may bo harvested directly with a combine, but great care must bo taken to prevent boat*; frig and molding In tht bin* i Hoitey Bee Contribute* To Nation’s War Effort Producing beeswax as a coating for shells and airplanes, Increasing farm crops through'pollination of flowers, and providing honey as a supplement to America’s sygar rationing—these are the contributions of th* tiny honey bee to the nation’s war effort. With beekeeping considered one of the essential farm activities, bees are perhaps playing a more important part in this war than ever before—more important, in fact, than in the ancient days when hives were kept on the ramparts of cities so they could be thrown down on besiegers. The bee is contributing its bit in three ways: as a pollinator, as a wax producer, and as a contributor to sweeten the American people. Mentioning that pollination was perhaps the most Important contribution to the war effort because the bees increase farm crops, especially fruits and many forage crops, by pollinating the flowers. Intensive cultivation in many of the large fruit, clover and alfalfa regions has destroyed many of the natural pollinators. Also, many of the natural pollinators do not increase rapidly enough in the spring to adequately pollinate the early flowers of apple and other fruit. First ‘Loco’ Bunt "Tom Thumb’’—first locomotive built in the United States—used gun barrels for boiler tubes. From it to the present streamlined locomotive Illustrates the great progress made in steel production. For now,'strong, but lightweight steels developed by research and rolled with great skill are available for use in modem transportation facilities, cutting down weight, giving maximum speed and efficiency. Express Omnibus? An express omnibus doesn’t mean a pretty fast means of automobile transportation—it is really the name of a kitchen helper in a hotel or restaurant.

Pilots Trained for High Altitudes With New Device A new low pressure chamber that can attain altitudes higher than anything previously achieved, which can climb six times faster than the finest pursuit ship in the world today, and the first of its type and scope to be installed in the aircraft Industry, has been put into operation. Known as the Stratotrainer, this new low pressure chamber will be used exclusively for physiological research and the training of high altitude crews by the Boeing Aircraft company, producers of the famous Flying Fortresses, which are betag used in the Pacific and European war theaters. Boeing’s Stratotrainer, during a test run, reproduced an atmosphere equal to that of an altitude far beyond 50,000 feet. Of Boeing design, the chamber can reproduce an altitude of 35,000 feet in 2H minutes, 50,000 feet in four minutes, and well over that figure in a few additional minutes. The high performance of the Stratotrainer marks an important innovation iq stratosphere research—as important as the Introduction of the aircraft industry’s first dual compartment stratochamber for the testing of cabin supercharging equipment, three years ago. The rate of climb will enable a study into the factors which contribute to "aeroembolism” which is the high altitude equivalent of deepsea divers* “bends.” It will enable an exhaustive study into the present ceiling, raising the celling of man above the present peak of approximately 40,000 feet.

Medicinal Flowers Belladonna, Stramonium and Henbane are all closely allied. The tops and roots are used for the alkaloids which these contain. They are hyoscyamine, stropine, apostropine, belladonnine, and scopolamine. They ar* used a* anodyne, anti-asthmatic mydriatic, to prevent griping of irritant cathartics, to relax muscles and decrease secretions. In plain words—pain relievers—and as such extremely important for the armed forces. Furthermore, scopolamine is one of the most satisfactory materials used in childbirth.
