Vail Awards Made Four mid-western telephone employees, including an operator at Alvin, 111., and an agent and two operators at Spring Valley, Wise., received national recognition May 31st with the announcement of the Theodore N. Vail Awards for 1942. A silver medal, accompanied by SSOO in cash, was awarded to each of them for outstanding public service during disasters in their home . communities last year. Mrs. Jennie Crouse, operator at the Rossville Telephone Company’s exchange at Alvin, Hl., a few miles : north of Danville, was the heroine { of a tornado that struck the town on March 16, 1942, wrecking nu-, merous buildings and taking a toll of six lives. She remained on duty for more than 14 hours, effectively using the few telephone circuits remaining in service to summon doctors, ambulances and volunteer aid and to put through the calls dispatching assistance to the homes where it was needed. At Spring Valley, Wise., Mrs. Joseph Fujko, agency manager for the Wisconsin Telephone Company, her husband and Miss Lila Wood, operators, refused to leave their posts on the night of September 17 1942, despite rising flood waters that eventually cut off all avenues of escape from the building. They spread a warning to telephone subscribers and continued to provide emergency telephone service until water rose above the switchboard. They were rescued finally through a hole chopped in the floor above. The National Vail Committee also voted group awards in the form of special bronze plaques to the traffic and plant employees of the Bell Telephone Company of Pennsylvania at Honesdale, Pa. and to the agency telephone operators of the same company at Hawley, Pa., for their courageous and resourceful acts during a flood which swept Wayne County in May 1942. The Vail Memorial Fund, from which the awards are made, was established in 1920 in memory of T. N. Vail, former president of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company.
Girl Scouts Entertain The Girl Scouts of Troop No. 70 entertained their mothers at a tea and Court of Awards, June 2nd. Seven girls received their second class badges; eight girls received first class badges; 163 proficiency badges were awarded the girls. A program was given refreshments were served. An exhibit was held showing work done the last year.

Too Much Heat It got so hot in Omaha, a bulge 20 inches high and 16 feet long appeared in the pavement. A county road crew used dynamite to break up the concrete before replacing it with a temporary surface.
