HOOSIER HOMOS front From now until the war is over, «oet of all but a comparatively few -articles cannot rise higher than the highest price at which they were -sold in March, although it can sink lower. This “price ceiling” applies to the manufacturer, the wholesaler and the retailer but most of us -primarily are interested in the retailer - the corner grocer, the butcher, the druggist, or the nearby -drygoods store. We have price control to make certain that the war does not bring -a tragic rise in the cost of living, a rise to heights which would mean suffering for many. Price control is our charter of security, but next time you go marketing remember that your cooperation is needed to make it work smoothly. Price control is a brand-new baby, and it may be some time before the infant feels

DOINGS OF YOUR DEFENSE COMMITTEE

This is the first of a series of weekly articles to appear in this space to keep you informed of the Volunteer Defense group for Speedway and will contain from time to time, tips and information on what to do in case of air raid, gas raid, or incendiiry fire, so that you may je able to best aid the workers in your district, and so that you may bet:er protect your life and iroperty.

The Speedway Volunteer Defense group held its second regular meeting Tuesday night at the City Hall. Progress is fast going forward toward starting the twenty-eight hour course on bombs, gas and auxiliary police work. Beside? discussing plans for getting the school started, Cleo Flynn, of the Allison Fire Prevention Squad, gave a physical demonstration of a magnesium fire and how to control and extinguish it. He used real magnesium and we had a real demonstration on how this material burns. Magnesium is the base material used in incendiary bombs which you are liable to find in the middle of your living room and running up the draperies.

Then Glenn Collins of the Speedway Police gave a talk on accident and traffic control during an air raid. Mr. Meo, of the Speedway Police, chairman of the meeting, added some interesting highlights on some of London’s experiences. Meetings will be every Tuesday night in the future, at the City Hall on Main Street and we especially ask that every resident of Speedway who originally signed up for this work, report at the next meeting, as well as anyone else who is interested in helping in this work. You will also receive some interesting instruction, even if never used.

We hope none of these things we are learning will ever have to be used. We may have to use them a year from now, maybe next month, and maybe tomorrow night. No one knows. Let’s be ready. We earnestly solicit everybody’s cooperation in this work and ask that you read this column every week. The purpose of this work and organization is just exactly what the name implies—the defense and protection of life and property—YOUß life and property. In case of a raid of any description on Speedway and vicinity, either from within or from miles away, we cannot depend on the Army, National Guard or police from other towns to helD us out, so we MUST be able to help ourselves. If you read your household insurance policy you will probably find that your personal property and buildings are not covered by fire from bombs or falling aircraft or any other damage during a blackout.

When our CONTROL BOARD is set up, you will be advised of their telephone numbers, names and telephone number of warden or auxilary Police for your street or district. We jnay at times ask every householder to co-operate by hav-

WUai'lfou&uy'WlUi. WAR BONDS

Our army spells and pronounces it ponton, not “pontoon”, as you do. Ponton bridges cost all the way from $15,000 to $700,000. The smaller bridge using individual metal pontons is pictured here. The largest ponton bridge is 1,080 feet long and is made of rubber instead of aluminum.

One small bridge has a weight capacity of 25 tons, using about 2,000 individual metal pontons. The smallest is used only to take troops over smaller streams. But whether our army uses the smaller or largest ponton, our engineers need plenty of them. If you and every American invests at least 10 per cent of income iif War Bonds every pay day we can supply our fighting forces with these essentials to a victorious war.
