'Researches on Brain Produces Strange Effects Acetylcholine and other substances, built out of the molecules the substance choline, play some ivery important parts in the working of the brain and of the whole network of the body’s nervous system. Inhaling of some of these substances would produce strange mental and nervous disorders. This is suggested by recent researches on brain conducted in America and in Britain. In England, Dr. Denis Williams, a "squadron leader" of the Royal Air force, and a distinguished brain surgeon and physiologist, has found that the substance acetylcholine produced powerful effects upon the electrical patterns of the brain. Some of the drugs, all "cholinelike substances," had one effect in small doses* and an opposite effect in large doses, but they all influenced the transmission of nerve messages between the brain cells, and from' the brain to the nerves, and from the nerves to the muscles. In military and civil medicine, the newly investigated drugs would be used for the treatment of nervous and mental disorders, including paralysis, epilepsy, and so on.
Anzacs Like Fighting Perhaps the most distinctive men of battle engaged in the various European war theaters are the Anzacs, tall, colorful, hard-bitten troops from "down under” who travel half-way around the world just to get in a good fight. The Anzacs—Australian and New Zealand Army Corps—manage to squeeze into those places where going is roughest. In the last war more than half the cowboy-hatted antipodean troops were wounded or killed. Again, in the present conflict, the Anzacs find themselves in a difficult sector. They were chosen to drive the Axis troops from Libya. A contingent got as far as Tobruk but were cut off from the main army and holed up for the summer. They held out for five months until a British force (more Anzacs) slashed their way through the German tanks on the Libyan escarpment and released their buddies from the siege.

Lion’s Club Present Speedway School With Patriotic Plaque On last Friday afternoon an impressive presentation ceremony was held in the Speedway high school gymn. The entire school body was assembled in the auditorium to witness the presentation of the “Spirit of America’’ plaque which was a gift of the Lions Club. Mr. Robert Thomas, president of the Speedway Lions made the presentation address, and the plaque was accepted on behalf of the school by Mr. N. D. Cory, superintendent. At the same time the Lion’s Club made the school a gift of a fine public address system. This was needed very much because of the many assembly programs held in the gymn. The plaque, “The Spirit of America” was sculptored by Visquesney, arid was inspired by the words of the American’s creed which were penned by William Tyler Page. In presenting it to the school Mr. Thomas made a splendid interpretation of it for the student body. This plaque will be hung in the halls of the schorl as a constant reminder of what real Americanism is. The Rev. L. A. Lindemann gave the invocation and the Rev. Howard Anderson led the students in the pledge of allegience to the flag. The dedication address was made by Commander Matthews of the United States Navy Recruiting Station.
