CANDID SHOTS
Congratulations are in order for “Ike” Edwards, owner of the Speedway Furniture Store. Tomorrow will be the fourth anniversary of his business in Speedway. He opened the doors of his store just four years ago, on November 1, 1937. Since that time he has won many friends in. our commdnity. His genial smile, pleasant personality, and his . interest in everything that pertains to Speedway have marked him as one of our best known business men. We all hope that he continues to prosper and that he remains in our midst many years. i —. Well, the “kidding” worked. Finally we received one of those pheasants! Yes, sir! We guess the boys finally got ashamed of themselves—probably tossed d coin to see who would have to part with one of the birds. Well, anyway, it was “purty” good. Thanks, Clarence! Joy, oh joy! Persimmon pudding days are here again. Among the many things we like, right up in the front row is persimmon pudding—and have be been “wading into it?” Just ask us!
You know, it’s funny, but we don’t have to travel to find natural beauty. Lotsa’ folks have been going to Brown County to see the trees in color. Well, we’ve been there, and it is right nice, but the loveliest fall colorings we’ve ever seen ANYWHERE is to be found in a maple tree in Clermont! There’s a maple out there, right on the main highway, just close to the Christian Church, that about a week ago was just about perfect! And, say, we’ve seen a few mighty purty trees here in Speedway. You know about how you can find “them castles in Spain” right in your own back yard, don’t you? It all depends on whether we look for beauty!

AFTER the last exciting touchdown has been scored the crowd that assembles at your house will be hungry as bears. And since It's very likely that you will be leaving the tootball stadium at the last possible minute, all your preparations for the post-game snack are best made In advance. The food can be served very shortly after you return if you leave In readiness a food assortment such as this: prepared buns ready to be relayed to the broiler, an Immense supply of home-baked beans, a tray of relishes, canned French-fried onions or potato sticks in a pan ready to be heated, and a rich spice cake with caramel frosting. Plenty of coffee, piping hot, Is all that is needed to complete this menu and make it a huge success! The broiler buns are not at all difficult to prepare—not—l mean, with an excellent modern electric broiler. Built with an eye to capacity, these broilers can accommodate a goodly number of buns at one time and still brown them all with the same degree of evenness. A succulent, and zippy filling for the buns may be made by wrapping three tender shoots of canned asparagus In a slice of minced ham loaf and spreading with horseradish butter. The ham rolls and split buns are broiled separately and the buns filled just before serving. Such snacks disappear at | a foptball party like snow before the sun. These Touchdown Buns, as they are called, may be broiled In relays—in which case you serve one trayful just as soon as it comes from the broiler, then refill the rack and broil a second lot while
Letters to the people: Will the young man who made the remark about the “two ton-ers” bowling team being sb inefficient, please apologize? Score “342”! Why not, let Blondie bowl next week for YOU? (We hope this is all in fun!) Here’s something one of our readers mailed us. It is taken from a newspaper advertisement of the First National Bank, Clarksville, Tennessee. My Little Girl ' Today my daughter, who is 7 years old, went to school—her second day. She. wore a dark blue dress with a white collar. She had on black shoes and wore blue gloves. Her pet dog, whose name is Coot, sat on the front porch and whined his canine belief in the folly of education as she waved goodbye and started off to the hall of learning. Last night we talked about school. She told me about the girl who sits in front of her, the girl with the yellow curls, and the boy across the aisle who makes funny faces. She told me about her teacher, who has eyes in the back of her head, and about the trees in the schoolyard, and about the big girl who doesn’t believe in Santa Claus. We talked about a lot of things—tremendously vital, unimportant things; and then we studied spelling, reading, arithemetic—and then to bed.
She’s back there now—back in the nursery sound asleep with “Princess Elizabeth” (that’s her doll) cuddled in her right arm. You guys wouldn’t hurt her, would you? You see, I’m her daddy. When her doll is broken or her finger cut of her head gets bumped, I can fix it—but when she starts to school, when she walks across the street, then she’s in your hands. , She’s a nice kid. She <L t run like a deer and darts about like a chipmunk. She likes to ride horses and swim and hike with me on Sunday afternoons. But, I can't be with her all the time; I have to work to pay for her clothes and her education. So please help me look out for her. Please drive slowly past the school and intersections—and please remember that children run from behind parked cars. / Please don’t run over my little girl. —A FATHER.
the first are being eaten. If you are handling the food without help, however, enough buns for all the guests may be broiled before any are served, and the extra "second helping” buns may then be kept hot in the oven or warming oven, placing them on the wire racks so that they will not steam and become tough. Here are the directions for the Touchdown Buns: TOUCHDOWN SANDWICHES (Serves 8) % pound minced ham loaf, sliced (about 8 slices) 1 No. 2 can asparagus spears, drained H cup prepared mustard or horseradish butter 8 long flat buns Have the meat dealer slice the minced ham loaf about H Inch thick. Drain asparagus spears. Wrap each slice of minced ham around 8 of the asparagus spears and fasten with a toothpick. Spread the outside of the ham roll with prepared mustard or horseradish butter, prepared by mixing 1 teaspoon of horseradish with each tablespoon butter used. Split the long flat buns by cutting lengthwise at right angles to the bottom crust. Press open and lightly butter each cut edge. Preheat broiler until It Is a glowing cherry red. Place minced ham rolls and a corresponding number of the split and buttered buns on the rack of the cold broiler pan and insert so that the surface of the food Is 4 Inches below the unit. Broil with door ajar about 6 minutes or until the buns are toasted and the ham rolls are heated through. Place a ham roll in each bun and serve Immediately.
