School News (Marcy Mann) “Spring is here; summer’s near; how can I tell?” Because all the little boys and girls are getting dreamier everyday. Yes, ’tis true —“Sprig has cub!” All I can say is that I just hope you aren’t too afflicted to read this column this week, ’cause, who knows, maybe you'll find out something that you didn’t know anything about! Well, how did you like the concert last Friday night? It was pretty grand wasn’t it? See (excuse please) I told you so! But all joking aside let’s all take off our hats to Mr. Northcott and his band for getting up a swell program for all of “us’ns”! It sure was great! It so happened that Wednesday afternoon several of the students in the commercial department of the high school were very fortunate in attending the County Commercial Meet at Southport High School. Miss Zimmerman and her 'team’ have been working constantly preparing for the two state contests which will be held on April 5 and the 12th, so you see this contest was both a great experience for these kids as well as a good preparation for the next two contests. The fortunate were: Advanced Typing: Eva Daupert, Dorothy Moldthan, Dorothy Gleason. Bookkeeping: Walter Slattery, Dorothy Gleason, Lolita Schoenewey. Shorthand, Marcy Mann, Novella Northcott. I’ll try to tell you the results of this contest next week! * Well, you know I promised to bring back a report on the Senior Play, which was previewed here al school yesterday? It’s tops! No foolin’ you just can’t miss it! Oh yes, and here’s another attraction! They will have tickets on sale at the door! So, what’s say, chums, surely you don’t want to miss this final project of the senior class of 11941, so come on, a quarter’s not Iso much for such fine entertainment! See you tonight at eight o’clock! Speedway High has certainly been down in the dumps, so to speak, this week, because one of its favorite teachers, Miss Spencer, has left our faculty—not permanently, mind you, but temporarily because of illness! Yes, she’s In the Methodist Hospital! We cerI tainly miss her around here, and can hardly wait for her to return! So, Miss Spencer, what do you say, get well right away, ’cause gee it’s I lonesome without you! Well, people, I know you’re awfully tired, and in a great hurry to -get your dinner, and get over to the high school to that play tonight, so I guess I’d. better close with this wish, that all your troubles will be as the fleeting hours—fleeting! Toodle-oo! Chiropractically Speaking (By Paul H. Tyner, D. C.) i Mineral Oil Evidence continues to pile up against the indiscriminate use of mineral oil internally, since 1931, when Jackson proved “that liquid petrolatum causes a considerable loss of Vitamin A to the animal organism if the liquid petrolatum is I mixed with the Vitamin A (in the form of butter fat) prior to ingestion.” In 1934 Dutcher and his associates demonstrated that mineral oil interfered with tjie utilization of Vitamin A from carotene and cod liver oil, as well as butter. In the same year, Till showed by case histories “that the oil when given daily in fairly large doses and for a considerable period of time will coat the mucous membranes of the stomach and intesttine and so prevent the digestion and absorption of food, with a consequent loss of nourishment to the body. ■ thereby causing a loss in body weight.” This results in various deficiencies, lecithin, for example, which is essential to the nerves. In 1939 Dr. James Morgan of the University of California announced that contrary to the claims of the . advertisers, his experiments showed that some of the mineral oil was absorbed from the intestines and ■ moreover, was damaging to the liyer and other organs. Other objections are, its use discourages normal peristaltic movement of the bowels. “This constant use of liquid petrolatum sometimes induces pruritis ani”— Hare. Soiling pt the clothing from leakage. ’ (Being an inorganic substance it foreign matter in the blood and sues, for while it can be absorbed it cannot be assimilated. Nature’s way is to furnish the body about a pint of bile a day to emulsify the fats in the intestinal contents and cooperate with the steapsin from the pancreas to split the fats into fatty acids ana giycerin and they mix with alkali in the alimentary tract to form soap, which acts as a natural lubricant and bowel cleaner. , The Chiropractor work with Nature by waking up lazy livers, gall bladders and pancreases so that they pour forth sufficient of their digestive juices.
