Missed out last week on this column (or hadn’t you noticed?) The ol’ man ‘flu’ is a bad actor and he sure “blitzed” this column last week. Oh, well the editor told me that he didn’t have room for it anyhow—so it was probably just as well.

Boys, things change fast on Main Street. Mr. Henry Noffke has turned the restaurant, which he has run in our community for many years, over to a new owner. Yessir, Mr. Pfisterer is the new proprietor of the cafeteria at 15th and Main Street. Good luck Mr. Pfisterer. Just heard some folks talking about the proposed improvements which the Christian church is planning. They sound pretty good to these ears. We’ve thought for a long time that the frame building should be improved with brick veneer. Speedway ought to be proud of all its public buildings. Guess they

need Toom down there, too, with so many new people coming to town. Some of ’em are bound to have some religion, you know. Well, did all- of you dance for the infantile paralysis fund this week?. From all reports the president’s birthday parties were well attended. Seems like there is enough misery in the world now, and we ought to help every cause which alleviates some of it. We’re full of doughnuts! The P.T.A. practically filled every home in town with these “indigestible delicacies,” and like everyone else, we ate ourselves sick on them. Oh well, one mild “tummy ache” for such a good cause won’t hurt us. The town board office has moved, but whether it will now stay “put” is < doubtful question, because it looks very much as though we’re going to have to have a “Town Hall” soon to house our local government. Oh yes, the office is now in the south side of the building located at 1430 Main Street. And another thing— Wayne’ Baxter doesn’t want you to forget his telephone number—he would miss all those calls about “when does the ash man come?” etc., etc., Yo.u can get him at the same number: Belmont 0231.

troop committee is now planning to get somone to take his place. I Hanen’s done a splendid piece of| work, and we will need some good , help to replace him with the boys. If anyone has any bright ideas about scout leadership, please communicate with J. T. Huber at Bel. 1945-M. We must not let this scout work die! It would be a blot on our community if Troop 66 'should go out of existence because no one would serve as scoutmaster. It’s bad enough that we have lost our Cub Pack for this reason—let’s not lose our scout work! People who have time enough for all the social organizations which are in our town—ought to have enough ’time for a scout troop! SEE YOU NEXT < WEEK.

BUSY PHONE LINE IS NOT NECESSARILY BEING USED If you telephone your residence and find the line is busy, and if, subsequently, you learn no one 'was home at the time, naturally you feel the telephone company was at fault. However, the folks may all be away and yet the telephone line may be busy. The house might even be boarded up and still the line could be in use. In other words, a telephone can be busy even If no one is at home because It is perfectly possible for two people to be calling the same number from different telephones at the same time, and if two people are calZng the same person at the same instant, one of them will find that the line is busy. Another way in which the line can be busy when not in actual use is when someone has forgotten to place the receiver on the hook. In such cases, no one can put through an incoming call. Also, in the case of party-line service, use of the telephone by any one of the subscribers on the line makes it busy, no matter which number on the line is being called.
