Spark Plugs Start Down The Victory Trail By UpSetting Lawrence Lions (Robert Alsmeyer) Bringing to a close their dis- _ astrous five- gfifck game losing WfckwfY streak, the A Spark Plugs of Speedway started a comeback by taking meas- U/K ure of the Law- 'JP rence Lions last J y Friday night on y \ the Speedway • I I cou rt. The JI/ Spark Plugs J* handed the Lions their third defeat in as many Speedway-Lawrence tilts, a series which started approximately one year ago when Lawrence was considered one of the top contenders in the Marion County tournament. Although the margin of victory was comparatively small, the Speedway team seemed to have few difficulties in controlling the game according to their own wishes. Speedway took the opening tip-off and shortly afterward Luther fouled C. Tremor in the act of shooting, but Charley missed on both attempts at the free throw line. After about three minutes of scoreless scrimmage, Bragdon hit a long from center court to give the Lions a two point lead over the locals. Immediately afterwards Powderly hit a short from under the basket, but Luther hit a beautiful two-hand short shot from the side, and the visitors were still two points better that the Spark Plugs. After a short scrimmage, Speedway called time out ‘ 'ind during the time out period King replaced Phipps for the Brown and Gold. In less than a minutes and a half; King left the same in favor of Phipps who had been taken out to receive some instructions from Coach Johnson; time-out was called again just as soon as Phipps . returned to the game. When time had been called

in again Powderly fouled Luther, who hit his free throw, and Sprinkle added two more points ion a fast break for the basket. J. Tremor, who seemed to be the big "spark” in the Spark Plugs, hit a long from corner court, but Luther immediately countered with a one-hand pivot shot from the cornet. Workman came into the game for C. Tremor, who was taken out to receive some instructions and returned later just before the quarter ended. Luther fouled J. Tremor, who hit his free throw and Spaulding hit on a fast break to close the first quarter with the score, standing at 11 to 5 in favor of the Lions. Speedway opened the second quarter by taking three points, one on a free throw by Powderly at the expense of Bragdon and the other two on a long shot by J. Tremor. Bragdon started the Lion’s second quarter scoring by hitting a long from corner-court and about three scoreless minutes ensued after which Lawrence called for a time-out period. After time had been called in again, C. Tremor brought forth a roar, of approval from the Speedway fans when he stole the ball, raced the entire length of the floor, misses his shot, shot again, missed, and finally tipped it in on a rebound shot. A few seconds later, C. Tremor added another point from the charity line, this one coming at the expense of big Jake Luther, making his second personal foul of the game. Spauling fouled Powderly in the act of shooting and Joe made good on both of his attempts, tleing the score at 13 apiece just as the buzzer ended the second quarter. In the second quarter, Speedway outscored the Lions 8 to 5 and in both of the first two quarters they played a better brand of ball than they have displayed so far this season. Big guns in the Speedway offensive were Joe Powderly and Jimmy Tremor, who have five points apiece, accounting for the ten of Speedway’s 13 points. Speedway opened the second half with the proverbial “bang” when big Bud Jenkins took the tip-off and then hit a two-hand short shot from under the basket. Bragdon drew first blood for the Lions in the second half by hitting a long from corner court. Rautzman fouled Powderly, who hit his free throw and C. Tremor doubled the current addition to the Speedway score by hitting a very ong shot from the corner. Speedway then started a short fouling spree when Jenkins fouled Bragdon, who missed. Powderlv fouled Luther, who hit, and C. Tremor fouled Luther, who missed his free throw, but retaliated with a long shot

from just in front of the center circle and Speedway called timeout for the first time In the third quarter. During the time-out period, Pugh went into the game for Spaulding. When play was resumed, Luther fouled Powderly, who hit and Jenkins took a hook pass from C. Tremor and hit a two-hander from under the basket. This time it was Lawrence who had to call time-out. Following the time-out, Jenkins fouled Bragdon, who hit and the third period ended with the Sparkplugs managing to eke out a two point lead over the Lions. Score at the close of the third quarter was 21 to 19 with Speedway on the long end. Early in the final quarter Bragdon and Sprinkle both missed fouls at the expense of J. Tremor and Phipps respectively. Powderly hit a rebound after an attempted twohand short shot by C. Tremor. C. Tremor fouled Bragdon, who hits and Speedway calls time-out with two minutes remaining in the game and the score standing at 23 for Speedway and 20 for Lawrence. After the rest period,' Rautzman fouled Jenkins, who hit his free throw and Luther committed his fourth personal foul of the evening against Joe Powderly. Before Joe attempted the free throw however, Rhoads came in for Luther, who was automatically' out of the game Clemmens replaced Sprinkle and Rautzman left the game in favor of Beagle, after which, Powderly hit his free throw. C. Tremor fouled Pugh, who likewise hit his donation shot. Speedway took the ball out of bounds, effected a oneminute stall and the game ended ?5 to 22 in favor of the Brown and Gold of Speedway. In spite of the more-or-less lax support that the Speedway team has been receiving from its followers, the boys played a great ball game and thoroughly deserved to win. The fans, however pessimistic they might have been before the game, were delighted with the victory, and your reporter noted a great sense of satisfaction among the players. Coach Johnson came into the dressing room, his face wreathed in smiles and was very hasty to congratulate the boys on their victory. It seems that ever since your reporter printed the I “journalistic scolding” of a few weeks ago, that he has succeeded in making more friends than enemies. We don’t want to seem superior or take on an “I told you so” attitude, but there are those who still, and probably always will, disagree, so the thing to do is to round up and toss out all of these, in the language of the present day, “Fifth Columnists” and “Espionagle Agents.”
