School News (Marcy Matin) It just looks as though “luck’s agin’ us”, so to speak, as far as winning basketball games is concerned. Still our Sparkplugs are trying hard, and you must remember that we are playing much tougher teams this year than we over have before. Not only that, but much bigger schools. So this little reporter thinks that they’re playing 0.K., and, fellow citizens, let’s keep following the gang—go to the games. Who knows? Maybe the next time the score will reverse and read Speedway—32; Visitors —25; Boy! Did we have fun today! You know we play Laurence Saturday night, and we’re really out to win! So, what did we do? We had a cheer session. Not only did we cheer, but we band members played our horns, and stuff. Wish you could have been here, it was really swell! So come on team, BEAT LAWRENCE! ! Well, can you imagine! Yesterday I ventured into the Home Ec. department, on my usual 8:30 tour of the buildings, and what should 1 spy, but Mr. Trosky and a few boys standing on the very top of a couple of ladders in the middle of the room! Well, I though, here’s some gossip. But tipon inquiring I found out that they weren’t playing circus at all. No, they were taking down the gas pipes in the Home Ec. room. Why? ’Cause they’re fixing it over. We’re planning to have new stoves, and everything. Te P.T.A. is even planning to buy a new electric refrigerator. Ain’t it ’wunnerful! Gee, fellows, look around. You’re sure to find some good cooks now! You know last year we had a homecoming game? Well, we’re going to this year, too. I thought I d better tell you in advance, so that you would all plan to come. It is going to be January 24th, when the Sparkplugs encounter the Avon boys. It’s sure to be a good game, and with the special program and everything—well, you’d just better plan to come, that’s all! And say, if you’re a Speedway H. S. letter-man—don’t be bashful—walk up to the ticket girl, say, “See, I got this letter playing for the Sparkplugs,” and you’ll get in free! Remember, January 24! . Say, I’ll Let you in on something —know where I’m going to be January 31? I’ll tell you, but don’t tell anyone, tell everyone! I’m going to be at S.H.S that night to witness the New Winchester game. You know why it’s so important? ’Cause, the receipts of this game go to the football light fund. We hope to have enough money in the future to install lights 1 on our football field, so we can|

Your Federal Income Tax—lndividuals A great number of people seem to be very much confused at this time regarding the term “GROSS INCOME”, as applied to Federal Income Tax returns to be filed for the year 1940. The term “GROSS INCOME” merely sets the amount of gross income a single or married person receives which requires him to file' a return, and not a taxable gross amount. For example: A single person may have a gross income for the year 1940 of SBOO.OO on which he would be required to file a return, but no tax liability exists due to the fact that he has an exemption of SBOO.OO. The same applies to a married person living with husband or wife for the entire taxable year. If each has income and their combined “GROSS INCOME” is $2000.00 or over, they must each file a return or file a joint return combining their incomes, regardless of credit for head of family or for dependents, and other authorized deductions. On separate returns, the personal exemption of $2000.00 may be taken by either husband or wife or divided between them. Interest and Taxes Paid Deductable Interest on personal indebtedness (as distinguished from business indebtedness,) paid on notes, mortgages, etc., are allowable deductions. Taxes paid on personal property, Real Estate, Gross Income. Tax, automobile Licenses (plates and weight tax,) drivers licenses and State gasoline taxes are also allowable deductions. Returns are due and payable on or before March 15, 1941 to the Collector of Internal Revenue, Federal Building, Indianapolis, Ind. The law imposes severe penalties for failing to make a return, or for making a false or fraudulent return. Penalties are also imposed for failing to file a return on time. Chas. T. Scruby, Speedway City, Ind. (Mr. Scruby has qualified himself as an expert on all matters of taxation and. as such, has consented to write a series of short articles for this paper on the general subject of Federal Income Tax. These articles have been prepared merely as information on this important subject in the hope that they will help you to understand the new Federal Income Tax Laws. We hope that they avill serve you in the preparation of your tax papers. (Signed: The Editor.) Card Party The Ways and Means Committee of the O. E. Speedway Christian Church Rev. Howard Anderson Minister SUNDAY SERVICES 9:30 A. M First Morning Service 11:00 A. M Second Morning Service 4:30 P. M Vesper Hour The minister of the church will preach at both services next Sunday morning. The subject of his morning sermon will be: “What Makes a Church Vital.” The chancel choir will sing for both services directing the music of worship. As we have emphasized before in this column, the Community’s Church conducts two services every Sunday morning. The first service, which begins at 9:30 o’clock and lasts until 10:50, is a combination of the educational and the worship features of the church. A completely graded church school is conducted during this period for all children from the nursery age to the young people’s age. We have a fine nursery department for very small children so that parents may bring their families and enjoy the services in the sanctuary while their children are cared for in their departments. The adults and young people meet in the sanctuary for a service which begins with group singing and brief class sessions and ends with the worship hour, holy communion and the minister’s sermon. The 11:00 o’clock service is a. half hour service of worship for those who find it more convenient to come at a later hour. You are invited to whichever service suits your needs the better. Vespers Our own youth choir will be back in the chancel to sing for the vespers next Sunday afternoon. We have enjoyed very much the music of our visiting choirs, but we shall be looking forward to the music of our young people next Sunday. These vesper service are quiet hours of prayer and meditation, conducted each Sunday afternoon by candlelight. Many people have voiced their appreciation of this time for thoughtful meditation in the sanctuary of the church. The minister will continue the vesper meditations, using as this theme: “How To" Meet God.” Everyone_ is cordially invited to this service. « -...... "Die building fund committee will meet in the study of the church, tonight at 7:30 o’clock. Final plans will be made for the finance program for the building extension project of the church. Speedway Theatre "Kit Carsun” one of the boldest and most dashing adventurers in American history with Jon Hall playing the title role is slated for its local showing at the Speedway Theatre starting Sunday. It has to do with Kit Carson’s adventures in getting a wagon train of pioneers across the dangerous lands of the West to California in spite of the efforts of California’s 'Spanish rulers to stop them by rousing the redskins. The stellar cast in “Kit Carson” features, in addition to Hall, Lynn Bari, Dana Andrews, Ward Band and Harold Huber. The other, picture on the Sunday program is “No Time For Comedy” starring James Stewart and Rosalind Russell. If you like what Jimmy did in Washington, you’ll be crazy about what he does on Broadway, and if you like what Rosalind did to “The Women” just wait till you see what she does to the men. There are probably no other two stars who could fit so slickly into the two principal roles as Stewart and Miss Russell, and their teamwork makes comedy history. As the cub reporter from the sticks who suddenly finds himself anc his plays a huge success on Broad way Stewart is completely believeable and believably bewildered. Miss Russell’s suave assurance in the role of his actress wife, wb protects him from Broadway wolves and the Park Avenu< blondes, is one of the year’s stand out performances. Also in the are Genevieve Tobin, Charles Ruggles and Ai Joslyn. Women’s Council Date Announced The women of the Speedway Christian Church are asked to remember that the Women’s Council will resume meetings on Wednesday, January 22nd. Announcement will be made in next week's Flyer concerning the program for this meeting. All women of the church will be welcome and the Executive Committee would like to issue an invitation to all womert of the community to attend these Council meetings. The sewing division of the Council, which will be working this year in connection with the local chapter of the American Red Cross, will meet at the church on Thursday morning, January 23rd to begin sewing for the refugee project.
