SPARKPLUGS DRAW 8-8 TIE WITH BEECH GROVE (Robt. Alsmeyer) It seems that the further into “their schedule the Spark Plugs go, the tougher the opposition becomek Last Friday’s game found Speedway playing a team that was more nearly their equal than any team they have previously encountered. From the opening kick-off to the final whistle both teams were fighting “tooth and nail” for every precious inch of yardage. Beech Grove, holding somewhat of an advantage in size, both height and weight, resorted strictly to the older “knock down and drag out” style of football for their ground gaining. Because of the stiff wind both teams attempted very few passes; Speedway tossed the pigskin four times, one of which was completed, and Beech Grove found receivers for one of their two aerial thrusts thus giving them a better record in this department of the game. The kick-off went to Webb, who fumbled and recovered deep in his own territory and thus put Speedway in a rather precarious position to start the game. The Brown .and Gold tried several plays, but were unable to make the necessary fifteen yards for a first down so the ball was snapped to Charley Tremor, who got off a rather nice punt that put the Hornets on about their own twenty yard line. Using their height and weight advantageously, the Hornets relied mainly upon an unbalanced line formation, for their bone-crushing line plunges and teeth-loosening end runs. It was late in the first period when Johnny King, hard-hitting sophomore back, took the ball on a fake through center and headed west to the only Speedway touchdown of the day. The scoring play was beautifully executed and the ten yards between King and the goal seemed simply to melt 1 away as he twisted and spun out .of the arms of would-be tacklers. Coach Johnson hastily rushed Dick Jennings into the game for the try for extra point after touchdown. The line held nicely and Jennings, kicking into a stiff wind sent the leather end-over-end squarely between the uprights in a beautiful conversion. The third quarter was a give and take affair with neither team scoring, although it was simply Speedway’s determination that prevented a Beech Grove touchdown. With the ball on Speedway’s own two-yard line the Brown and Gold line dug in their cleats and warded off a vicious touchdown attack for two straight downs. Speedway then took possession of the ball and immediately punted out of danger. The situation was the same as it was at the end of the half in the Lawrence game just a week prior. With the ball resting at approximately midfield and only five seconds playing time left in the half, Charley Tremor leaped high into j the air and intercepted a Beech Grove pass and started streaking down the sideline, only to be brought down with no time left for any more plays in the first half. About midway in the third period, King again took the ball and slithered and twisted his way through four of the six members of the Beech Grove team, and was headed for the pay-off stripe when

the two remaining Hornets cleverly maneuvered into position and [ forced him out of bounds on about | his own eighteen yard line. I It was the final section of the game that proved to be Speedway’s downfall. It was due to two things: one, three heavy penalties that carried a combined number of thirty-five yards, and two. an inspired Beech Grove team. The first of these damaging penalties came early in the quarter when Speedway was penalized five yards for overtime in the huddle. Shortly afterward, big Joe Powderly was penalized for illegal use of his hands. And then came the sting of the Hornets. There were only three minutes remaining in the game when Beech Grove threw a touchdown pass and made good their conversion to tie up the ball game at eight all. Shortly after the kick-off, with Speedway holding the ball well past the mid-field marker, Bob Bland was called for clipping and presented with a fifteen yard penalty. In the time that remained, the boys were unable even to get the ball in position for an attempt at kicking a field goal, so the game ended—a dead heat. The Speedway Spark Plugs have only to win their games with New Augusta and Center Grove and they will be declared the Marion County Champions for the 1940 season. We don’t want to be too optimistic, but from where we’re sitting it looks as though Speedway’s first football team might be the ultimate county champs. At any rate let’s all get behind them and give them all the moral support they need to finish their initial season in a blaze of glory. THE SALE IS ON! The sale is on! CHIROPRACTICALLY SPEAKING Prejudice (By Paul H. Tyner, D. C.) It seems that with all the examples we have before us, showing that people bring unnecessary trouble on themselves and others dimply by following blind prejudice, that we would profit by these examples more than we do and there would be less prejudice in this world than there is. As an Tlustration of this, I recently got in the way of an accidently discharged bullet and in talking to a Drugless Physician about it he asked me who dressed the wound and I told him that I went to a certain surgeon near by, where-

upon he twitted me for patronizing a medical doctor and wanted to know why I did not take care of it myself. I told him that in a case of that kind I wanted someone who specialized in surgery, as that is out of my line. I felt that if the saying “he who is his own lawyer hath a fool for a client” is true for the lawyer, it is no less true when adapted to the doctor. At another time, when I sprained my knee, I had an Osteopath to work on it and was roundly denounced for this, by a fellow chiropractor, as being untrue to my science. Now there are plenty of Chiropractors that are versed in handling athletic and other injuries to all part of the body and some of them, like Bonesetter Richter and M. B. De Jarnette, have a national reputation for their skill in this kind of work, but I knew the particular Osteopath in question was better qualified to take care of my knee sprain than the chiropractor 1 was talking to, so I refused to be persuaded by such prejudicial criticism. I was recently in conversation with two elderly gentlemen and when they found out that I was a chiropractor they began telling experiences which were not so good. Upon inquiring when they had been to a chiropractor it developed that one of them had taken one adjustment from a chiropractor, forty years ago and the other one thirty years ago. Their complaint , was that the adjustments were too I painful and that they never went I back. I explained to them that | the adjustment given by a modern i chiropractor to day is quite different from that administered by his predecessor in the days when chiropractic was in its infancy, and the patient was suspended between two benches, and the Toggle Recoil Actist landed a vicious ! thrust on his back that sent his I midriff almost to the floor. The I fact that chiropractic has progresi sed to the extent it has, in spite of ! its crude beginning should be sufI ficient proof of its- inherent worth. NOTE: Dr. Tyner may be consulted at his office in the Odd Fel- ' low building during the day and at his Speedway City office, over Rosner’s Drug Store, 16th and Main, from 7:00 p. m. to 9:00 p. m. except Thursdays and Sundays.
