Whoopee! Has Speedway a football team or not !! ! They sure took the measure of that Decatur Central bunch last Friday afternoon at Stout Field. Boy, oh boy, what a score—4 B-8. We’ll let you In on a little secret while we’re doing it, too—according to six-man football rules, when one team reaches a score of 45, the game is automatically over. Speedway had to play its second string men during the second half in order to give its customers a full game. My, my—.

We read in our favorite paper last week that George Scholl Speedway Thespian, received the award of the leading male role for the play, “What A Life,” to be given at I. U. .in November. We know George rather well, and we certainly feel he deserves this high honor. This columnist wants to add "Congratulations to those George has already received from his friends. Do, re, mi, fa,sol, la, tl, do— No, We’re not going crazy, we’re just running the scale to remind you that Speedway is going to have a real-for-sure-enough operetta on November Ist. We haven’t found out all about it yet, except that it has

something to do with a damsel named Mary and that a lot of Speedway women are rending the local air practicing their vocal lessons. We’ll let you in on things as soon as we learn more. You know us, the Walter Winchel of Main Street!. , HEADLlNE—Speedway to have two good newspapers now. We read with interest recently that the school paper, the Speedette, wiU start its winter activities very soon now. We’ve always read the Speedway School news with a great deal of interest. The young people who get out such an ambitious sheet are to be congratulated. Jimmie Kellam, well known Speedway journalist, will be the editor of the paper this year. We are proud to welcome another Speedway paper as it resumes its way for another school year. Good Luck to Jimmie and all the staff. We hunted down one of the local Lions last week and found that the Club’s tree-planting-project is no pipe dream. Yessir, these local “Kings of the Forest” are really going to sponsor the planting of trees in the new Speedway Park. We hear they even had a nurseryman and plans for such planting at their last meeting. Looks like action along the western front to us. Speedway people ought to co-operate in every possible way with such a fine project.

Well, we did get back on the front page last week, didn’t we? We may not stay there long, but it pays to howl for your rights. SEE YOU NEXT WEEK.

SPEEDWAY THEATRE Action, thrills and adventure packed together in a way that spells entertainment for everyone will be the cinematic order of the day when “They Drive By Night,” opens Sunday for three days at the Speedway Theatre. The all star cast consists of such luminaries of the Hollywood heavens as George Raft, Ann Sheridan, Ida Lupino and Humphrey Bogart. George Raft, as hard boiled Joe Fabrini who could take his women or leave them finds that it isn’t so easy to leave a certain flaming redhead, played by Ann Sheridan. She is a fiery waitress at a roadside case where she slings out hash and wisecracks with equal ability. But Raft’s heart melts when he discovers that her flippancy hides a loyal and sincere character. His brother, played by Humphrey Bogart, gets into an accident which costs him his right arm. Joe is then forced to ask a friend of his, portrayed by Alan Hale, for a job Joe’s troubles starts anew when Ida Lupino, as Hale’s wife, falls in love with him and fails to take notice when he treats her coldly. The year’s most sensational film climax occurs when Lupino executes a vicious plan to murder her husband and win Joe. In addition to the splendid starring cast, the supporting roles are handled by such popular screen favorites as Roscoe Karns, John Lite I and Joyce Compton. The second feature is one of the most hilarious pictures to come out cf Hollywood this year. Hitting a new entertainment peak, “Sailor’s Lady” has romance ashore and fun afloat.
