Last week we discussed the effect of pressure on nerve trunks, coming from the spinal cord on the side of the spinal column, where the openings between the vertebrae (and through which nerves pass) were decreased in size and altered in shape, so as to cause pressure on the nerve and thus alter the normal rate of nerve impulse flow traveling over the nerve fibres involved. Inasmuch as the organ, gland, or tissues supplied by a nerve that was suffering interference to its normal impulse rate, will not be receiving its accustomed rate of energy. it will function abnormally, being either over active or under active depending upon whether the nerve interfered with is an activating nerve or an inhibitory nerve. At one time Chiropractors were puzzled when symtoms occurred on the side of the body opposite that where the nerve channels between the vertebrae were made by tilting or rotation, and it seemed that there was a flaw in the chiropractic theory of nerve interference, until the matter was cleared up by that most profound thinker on the functions of the human body, Dr. James N. Firth, Dean of Lincoln Chiropractic College. in Indianapolis, when he very -iclearly showed how pressure could gpe brought on the nerve trunk coming out of the openings (foramina) on the side of the spihe where they are made larger. because of the fact that the nerve sheaths covering the fibres, and having attachment to the spinal segment above and below, also stretch when these segments were pulled tipart and the stretching of these nerve sheaths causes pres•jra on the nerve fibres, and as nerve tissue is the most sensitive tissue ip the human body, it is very quick to respond to any ir-

ritation, and the reaction of the nerve is bound to show _up in Whatever that nerve supplies. If the above is true, then it follows that the way to restore normal function of any part of the body is not to attempt to treat the effect, but to remove the cause, for because of the moveable character of the bones of the spine and stresses they are subject to, it has been estimated that 95% of all interference to normal nerve expression and transmission occurs where the nerve trunks leave the spinal cord and come out between the vertebral segments.
