school’s first year of the sport. Until Tuesday of this week, the practice sessions consisted mainly of blocking, tackling practice, using an improvised dummy, lim-bering-up exercises, and some signal drills. Tuesday the boys gave up the dummy work and concentrated heavily upon signal drills and the proper execution of a number of plays. In these plays, Coach Johnson has worked out a unique system for the use of the shift, very similar to that used by the leading eleven-man teams of the country. Johnson also revealed that the shifting movement TTas not been brought into play by any of the other Marion county sextettes. To date, no “first” or “second” teams have been seleteted, but from observations made at the various practice sessions, it is probable that the “varsity” lineup will appear something like this: King .-. GUILD FINDING SNAPSHOT IDEAS
' Wk Wfet a* To get picture Ideas, pick an ordinary object—such as the scythe here. It gives you a starting point—and the ideas develop naturally. Almost any object will do, if It's big enough to show up In a picture.
"T’VE run out of picture ideas," a 1 friend told me the other day. "I don’t know what to shoot next.” "Nonsense,” I told him. "There are plenty of ideas, if you use the right method to find them. What you should do is just pick a subject —any old object that might work into a picture—and use that as a Starting point” “For example?” he said. “All right,” I replied, and showed him the picture above. “Suppose you saw that scythe somewhere — •ay at a farmhouse where you visited. Alone, it wouldn’t be a picture. Yet by enlisting the owner’s aid, you could get a whole ■ series. You could show him sharpening it, carrying it over his shoulder as he started out to work, using it in the field. A close-up of the blade, shearing through grain stalks, might be Interesting. “You see, it’s all a matter of putting two and two together.” ■ “I begin to understand,” he said. •‘Pick something that may lead to

J. Tremor RE j Ramsay ; LE s These boys have been working as one team during their signal drills and dummy scrimmage. Oi course there are other boys who show a good deal of promise, but who still need a little polishing up. Among these are Steele Roberts, a speedy little half-back who has plenty of drive and a world of spirit. Joe Powderley is another strong contender who is making a heavy bid for a berth at one of the end positions. Because of a knee-injury, John Ewing a quarter-back who was quite a standout during spring practice, has been forced to retire in favor of Al Webb, the spunky little lad who recently captained the Speedway Merchants through a successful softball season. However, Ewing has started his long awaited “come-back” and is setting his course straight for a permanent berth as first string quarter-back. Once his knee returns to normal, John’s passing and kicking ability should give him quite an advan-
a picture—and then build picture ideas around it.” "Exactly, and here’s another example,” I said. “Your little girl has a doll buggy, but I haven’t seen it anywhere in your picture collection. Why not show her using it—there’s a whole series of pictures. Show her placing a doll in the buggy—wheeling it down the front porch steps—along the street or house walk —and so forth. Picture her with a playmate, too, discussing how well the doll looks today. "And here’s another idea. I know she has a huge teddy-bear. All right—pose the teddy-bear as if pushing the buggy, and have your daughter showing him how to push properly. Arrange it nicely, and you’ll have a clever, unusual shot.” So, that’s really all there is to it. Pick a starting point—any ordinary object that could fit into a picture —and the picture ideas come quite naturally. Load up your camera and try it You’ll find the system works —and what’s more, every picture will have a story to tell. John van Guilder
