PLANT PEONIES (The Master Gardener) The Peony is one of the hardiest and most easily grown of the perennial flowers. It will bloom year after year with little care. The period from September 15 to October 15 is the ideal time to plant Peonies. By September, the new eyes of the Peonies for the following season’s growth are formed, and the plants are dormant. September planting enables the plant to establish new feeding roots up until the time Winter sets in, thus making plants that will show stronger growth the following Spring. However, a lording originator and grower of Peonies emphasizes that Peonies may be planted with satisfactory results as late as just before the final freeze-up. He states that while the early fall plantings do show a little stronger growth the following Spring, that in the second growing season there is no preceptible difference either in size of plant or amount of bloom. Feonies want sun, good drainage. and a rich deep loam soil. Make the bed ready a week or more before actual planting time

50 the soil can settle. A thorough preparation of the soil is necessary because of the deep rooting character of the Peony, and the permanency of the planting . Since Peonies, once they are established, occupy the same garden spot for a number of years, and since they are heavy feeders and will soon deteriorate from a lack of plant food in the soil, prepare the bed to a depth of two feet and enrich the soil with an application of a complete balanced plant food. Dc not set the roots too deeply in the soil, as too deep planting is often the reason Peonies do not bloom. In light soil buds may be covered by three inches of soil; in heavy soil the covering should not

exceed 2 inches. Do not plant too closely—not closer than three feet Do not plant near trees or shrubs. Do not plant in soil where Peonies have previously grown. Peony plants should receive a light mulch of straw or similar material the first Winter after planting. At this time the roots have not become well established and alternate freezing and thawing is likely to do much damage. Do not apply this mulch until after the ground is frozen. It is not necessary to mulch Peonies after the first year. —Madison Cooper’s Gardening Magazine.
