Ton'll find this an "old faithful" recipe when it comes to standard, uniform results, if you’ll keep in mind the five point plan for making cakes; a tested recipe, good ingredients, accurate measurements, proper method of mixing (ss prescribed In the recipe!), and uniform, controlled baking temperature. Reliable recipes and good Ingredients ate available by the score, and When you’ve found the ones you Hke, stick to them. Bake in a moderately slow oven (325*) for about 60 minutes. Loosen carefully from the pan and turn out onto large cake plate. Frost with fluffy boiled icing. When ready to serve, arrange a small glass howl in the center of the ring, mold, and fill with fresh flowers (pink sweet peas, or forget-me-nots and sweetheart roses are especially lovely). Decorate the edge of the plate with a spray or two of fern, if desired.
Boiled Icing 2)4 cups sugar % cup light corn syrup % teaspoon salt % cup water 2 egg whites (well beaten) 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Place sugar, com syrup, salt and water together in a saucepan and cook to the firm boil stage (250*). Pour the hot syrup slowly Into the well beaten egg whites, beating constantly. Add vanilla extract and continue beating until the frosting will hold its shape when tossed over the back of a spoon. Sugar in Desserts In ices, sherbets, and ice-creams alone, Americans consume over two hundred million pounds of sugar annually.

LEARNS LANGUAGE TO TALC WITH RELATIVES IN ITALY More than a year ago, when Eve* lyn Marsili, of Burlington, Wise., celebrated her eighth birthday, she named as her choice of a gift an oversees telephone call to Italy to her grandparents, in Mariano. When told that her grandparents in Italy did not speak English, little Evelyn promptly set about studying Italian. Such progress did she make that when her ninth birthday came, she was able to enjoy her prized gift of a 6,000 mile overseas telephone call and to carry on a conversation in Italian with her grandparents. Her father also talked with hia parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gluseppl Marsili, whom he had not seen since he left Italy for the United States in 1913. It was also a momentous call far the' grandparents. Telephone service is a new thing in Mariano, having only recently been Installed, and the Marsili family has the only telephone in the village.

Sunlight at Night Through a new process described by the Oil and Colour Chemists association in England, interior walls can now be painted with special colors absorbing sunlight during the day and giving it back again in the dark, by glowing. This new selflighting process can be utilized for red, orange, blue, and violet, and finds an especially practical use in the indication of switches, door-han-dles and key holes. AMERICAN LINDEN (BASSWOOD) (TITIA AMERICANA) Most widely know of the lindens, is probably the European specias, Tilia Turopaea, which is often cultivated with us. The name is the adjectival form of linde referring to the strong inner bark once used for cordage. Other forms of the name are -Tin,” “linn,” “linfe’’ and “lyne.” It was this tree, by the way, that gave the family name to the great
Linnaeus. In America the inner bark of the tree is known as bast or bass and the tree is usually called basswood. Our familiar tree was until recently known as Tilia Americana, but it is now known as Tilia Glabra and still another specific name is probably available. In addition to basswood our tree is known as “bass-tree,” “yellowbasswood” and “red basswood.” Borrowing from the European species it may be called “linn’’ and its variants, especially if the speaker is a native of Europe. It is also known as “American linntree,” “white linn,” “southern linn ” “American lime-tree,” and “black lime-tree.” The tree is mistakenly called “white-wood’’ a name more properly given to the • tulip-tree.” (Liriodendron tulip-

The name of “yellow basswood” may refer to the yellowish wood or to the flowers which are also yellow. “Beetree” doubtless refers to the fragrant nectar-laden blossoms beloved of bees. Honey from this source is highly regarded in the Northern States. Wickup” is an Indian term for tying material, but “spoon-wood” and “whistle-wood’’ are probably wrongly referred to this species, though the twigs can be made into fine whistles when the sap is running in Spring. Daddy-nut and monkey-nut are references to the small hard nuts, several of which are borne on a winged stalk which serves as a parachute to aid in distributing the seeds to distant areas.—Willard N. Clute, in Americon Botanist. —Madison Cooper’s Gardening Magazine.
