ROSES IN SPEEDWAY While it is so hot and dry even to think of working in our gardens gives us a tired feeling, and it is no small job just to keep it watered enough to help it to hold until the rains come. All the lovely fresh looking yards here in Speedway sure is positive proof that everyone is on the job of helping his garden through the dry spell. Now is a good time to make notes of the mid-summer blooming shrubs, and of course the best place to do this is at any of the many nurseries, several of them within a few minutes drive of Speedway. Another good garden product we have close at hand is a peat moss bog. It is in the neighborhood of 59th and Keystone. Peat moss, is sold very reasonable. CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATIONS The United States Civil Service Commission has announced open competitive examinations for the positions listed below. Applications must be on file with the Commission’s Washington office not later than the closing dates mentioned in each case. For two of the examinations two closing dates are given—the first date governs receipts from States east of Colorado the second from Colorado and States westward. The salaries given in each case' are subject to a retirement deduction of 3%%. Junior graduate nurse, $1,620 a year, U. S. Public Health Service, Federal Security Agency, and Veterans Administration. High-school study and completion of a specified training course in a recognized school of nursing are required, except that applications may be accepted, under certain conditions, from persons now in attendance in their final year of training. Because of the demand for eligibles the minimum height requirement has been reduced to 60 inches. Applicants xiust not have passed their thirty-fifth birthday. For this examination applications will be rated as received until further notice. Senior medical officer, $4,600 a year; medical officer, $3,800 a year associate medical officer, $3,200 a year; various optional branches. The places of employment are: Public Health Service, Food and Drug Administration, Veterans Administration, Civil Aeronautics Authority and Indian Service. Aplicants must have been graduated with a M. D. degree from a recognized medical school, and must have had professional experience in special branch of medicine. For the associate grade applicans must not have passed their fortieth birthday, and for the other grades they must hot have passed their fifty-third birthday. For this examination applicants will be rated as received until further notice.
Pathologist (medical,) $3,800 a year; veterinarian (research,) a year, $3,800; Chemical Warfare Service, War Department, Edgewood Arsenal, Md. For each of the associate grade applicants must have had appropriate education, either in a recognized college, medical school, or veterinary school, and appropriate experience. Applicants must not have passed their fifty-third birthday. Closing dates for receipt of applications are Sept. 9 and Sept. 12, 1940. Ornithologist, $3,800 a year, Fish and Wildlife Service, Department of the Interior. Applicants must have completed a four-year college course with major study in zoology, and must have had experience in taxonomic and curatorial ornithology. Applicants must not have passed their fifty-third birthday. Closing dates are Sept. 3 and September 6, 1940. Full information as to the requirements for the examinations, and application forms, may be obtained from the Secretary of the Board of U. S. Civil Service Examiners at the post office or customhouse in any city which has a post office of the first or second class, or from the United States Civil Service Commission, Washington, D. C.
