Speedway City is now an exceedingly active business community and its figures are not included in the city’s statistics. Unless all signs fail, Speedway will become more and more an important business center. It is known that many Indianapolis firms have been considering the establishment of branches in the suburb during the last six months because men generally seemingly are becoming convinced that the future growth of this section will justify special attention from local business interests. The time may come when the Speedway will become a part of Indianapolis but this annexation should not be encouraged until the interests that have made the Speedway a thriving community feel that they desire to become a part of the city. There is a distinct advantage to industry in having a community like Speedway City next door to Indianapolis. Without casting any reflection on ourselves, industries sometimes like to locate in such a community because the people in such a district have a common interest in running their own affairs in accord with purely local interests. SPEEDWAY CITY HAS DONE A FINE JOB OF ATTENDING TO ITS OWN BUSINESS. The residents of the suburb and the business interests there seem to be well pleased with their local conditions. WE CAN SEE NO POINT IN ENDEAVORING TO ANNEX THE TO GIVE INDIANAPOLIS A MORE IMPRESSIVE POPULATION FIGURE. It is not the size of a city that counts so much as the position of business and employment in the entire community. ..THEREFORE, AS LONG AS SPEEDWAY DESIRES TO BE AN INDEPENDENT COMMUNITY WE FAVOR LEAVING IT ALONE, WHILE GIVING’ THE DISTRICT ALL THE SUPPORT AND COOPERATION THAT CAN BE PROVIDED BY INDIANAPOLIS. —Reprinted by Permission of Indianapolis Commercial.

Suspense makes this picture Interesting—and situations of this type are easy to create. Try your hand at “suspense shots’’—both “singles’* and “series.” It’s good camera fun.
SUSPENSE the feeling that * something is “about to happen” -makes a picture interesting. Watch tor situations that involve suspense—or create the situations vourself and you’ll find a sure mute to effective pictures. A situation doesn't have to be 'implicated or out of the ordinary. • fact, everyday situations are dually better. A shot of the cat atching the canary—a man blowag up a toy balloon—somebody building a house of cards—all these are good, and you can think of many others. Such pictures are interesting because you can see the "trouble ahead" signal. You anticipate the moment when the balloon will hurst, or the house of cards will topple. And. for picture purposes, the anticipation is often better than the actual event. Of course, it’s a shame to waste a really good “suspense” idea on just one picture. To get the full .force and flavor of the situation, make a series. Build up the suspense, picture by picture—then relieve it. by showing what Anally happens. For example, take that house of-

cards idea. Shoot one picture right at the start, when the flrst two cards are placed—then two or three more pictures as the bouse grows, stdry by story. And last, when it collapses, show your sub-! ject looking at the debris, with a startled or disappointed expression.) If you have a small son or daugh-{ ter, who can build the card house, this series will be a “natural" tor your album. Or. try It with Uncle I John as the subject. ) Again, take the cat and the gold- f fish —as shown above for the/ start of a "suspense series.” Just; put your aquarium on a table in J the sun—and the cat will provide I the necessary poses. Shoot each • good pose as it occurs then ar- I range the shots in the best order { later. The Speedway Flyer : Yoar Own WIRES HITCHED TO SPIKES FIND TELEPHONE CABLE BREAK
Some improvements were being made recently in the city of Greenville, S. C., and in the process of the work, a number of iron spikes were driven in the ground near an under, ground telephone cable. These spikes protruded from the ground approximately two feet. When trouble developed in this telephone cable the cable repairman who was sent to locate it found that it came from where the city employees had been working. He noticed the spikes driven in the ground and was reasonably sure that one or more of them had punctured the cable. It would have required considerable digging to pull up all the

spikes. Instead, the repairman connected one terminal of a head receiver to one side of a 4% volt battery and connected the other side of the battery to the cable. Then a wire was fastened to the other side of the receiver and this was touched to the different spikes. On the spikes that were not in contact with the cable, a grounded line noise was heard, but when the spike causing the trouble was touched, there was no noise except a battery click. Two spikes were found in contact with the cable. One had punctured it and the other was driven beside the cable and touching it. As a result, the trouble was cleared promptly with only a minimum amount of digging.
