GUILD GETTING CORRECT EXPOSURE - a 1 HLite IIL. Ie? mF wl Mm :<• iw BBRgk iI B 1 Ks , x, MBp' • To get exposures right, classify your subjects correctly. Here, backs are to the sun, so faces are In “open shade.**
IT IS NOT difficult to get correct exposure tor an outdoor picture, although the matter seems to bother many amateur photographers. As a matter pt fact, a moment’s thought and a bit of common sense ■will settle almost any exposure question. In figuring any exposure, the essential point is: how much light does the subject reflect? A brilliant beach scene will reflect a great deal of light—so, obviously, exposure can be less than for an “average” scene. On the other hand, a shady scene or very dark subject reflects less light to the camera — and so exposure must be more than average. Inexpensive cameras such as the popular box type and low-priced folding models are adjusted to give correct exposure for subjects in sunshine, when loaded with average film of average speed. For finer cameras, and the same film, the basic exposure for subjects in sunshine is 1/50 second at f/8 lens opening. The inexpensive cameras in many cases have an adjustment for a smaller lens opening, to be used when picturing sunlit subjects on a beach, or on brilliant water. With a

finer camera, you can simply stop down to f/11, and shoot these scenes at 1/50 second. Pictures of a subject in open shade (not under trees) can be taken with a finer camera at 1/25 second and f/8, or 1/50 second at ' f/5.6. With a box or inexpensive folding camera, place the subject in , somewhat deeper shade, and give a very short "time” exposure, with the camera on a firm, steady, support, such as a table edge. For a few cents, you can get an exposure guide which eliminates calculation of exposures. You simply set ft dial for the type of subject or lighting—and the correct lens opening and shutter speed are automatically indicated. Be sure to classify your subject correctly. Note the picture above. The general scene is bright and open, but the subjects’ backs are to the sun. Therefore, the faces are shaded, and so they could actually be classified as subjects in “open shade.” Don’t let exposure worry you. Apply common sense to it —use a dependable exposure guide—and you need never get an incorrectly exposed shot John van Guilder

FORMER SPEEDWAY RESIDENT MAKES “HOLE IN ONE’* A. E. Ferguson, better known to many Speedway folk as “Gene,” joined the very exclusive golfers’ club recently at the Illinois Country Club when he mac> the golfer’s impossible shot, a hole in one. Gene teed off at the ninth hole and to the surprise of one and all, his ball sailed 127 yards to sink sweetly into the cup for a real hole in one. For this distinction Mr. Ferguson received a write-up in the Chicago Tribune. We were in Chicago ourselves last summer and had a nice visit with Gene. Now when we see him, we’ll have to take off our hats in honored respect to the golfer who can make the impossible shot. Congratulations, Gene.

as many starts by the league-lead-ing Pittsboro Merchants, last Monday evening. The game was, by far, the most thrilling encounter in which the Speedway team has yet participated. In the early stages of the game, the home-town boys grabbed a lead by, pushing one run across the plate in both the first and second innings. The local lads continued their dazzling display by holding the pace-setters to a single little fluke hit until the game was well past the half-way mark and, by this time, it began to appear as though the race-town boys were running the game to suit themselves.
The game had progressed well into the fifth frame before the league-leaders were successful in squeezing across the plate their initial marker, but after that, there was a different tale to tell. In the Speedway half of the sixth inning, the side was retired in one, two, three order, and then came the fatal blow. In the last half of the sixth,Pittsboro staged one of the most enthusiastic rallys that we have ever witnessed, and succeeded in tallying four more big runs thus making the score stand at 5 to 2, with Pittsboro on the long end. The Merchants came to bat in the first half of the final inning with a grim determination to win, or at least make a bold rush on Pittsboro’s slim three run lead.
Although they were very successful in getting the bases loaded with nobody out, try as they would they could only net one run before the side was retired, and thus the game ended with the final score reading Pittsboro 5 and Speedway Merchants 3'. We sincerely urge all of you ardent baseball fans to “get behind” this team; go to as many of the games as is possible and lend the boys some mental and vocal support because we feel that these fellows are really going to get out and do some fancy stepping in the soft-ball world.
