' Lakes of Switserland Aside from 13,000 ponds, not counting “the pond” between America and Europe that you must cross to get there, Switzerland has 1,484 lakes; and yet it is only about half the size of the state of South Carolina, and is usually thought to be full of mountains. Europe’s Small Area England is smaller than North Carolina; France is smaller than Texas; Italy is smaller than New Mexico. It would take three Denmarks to make one Wisconsin. All of which explains why Americans > see so much of Europe on one trip. SPEEDWAY THEATRE “Typhoon” in full technicolor and Dorothy Lamour in less than ever in one of the big hits which opens at the Speedway Theatre Sunday for a three day showing. This South Sea romance roars in with a storm and a shipwreck, that maroon little Dorothy on an uninhabited island, far from normal sea lanes. Scenes switch to a nearby island, ten years later, and to Robert Preston, derelict sailor who was discharged from Annapolis. Preston’s life is saved by his friend Lynne Overman shanghais him aboard his pearl hunting submarine after a bar room brawl with a Polynesian Chief. Forced to flee the Chief’s vengence, they put to sea, but must abandon ship on Dorothy’s lonely Eden for lack of oil. Preston, away from his party, is overcome with heat, and literally captured by Dorothy Lamour and her female chimpanzee, Koko. The thrilling love story mounts hand in hand with suspense as J. Carroll Naish leads a
mutiny, and as the pursuing Chief discovers the sailor’s hideaway. Climactically, the terrifying typhoon follows a raging jungle fire. You’ll grip your seat when this devastating fury boils in, when whole palm trees are uprooted, and go hurtling with the gale before your eyes. Following that is the terrific tidal wave, that swamps the entire island! You’ll enjoy the beauty and terror, the brevity of Dotty’s costume, the antics of Koko and the humor of Lynne Overman. Also on the same program will be “20 Mule Team” starring Wallace Beery, Marjorie Rambeau, Leo

Carrillo and Moah Beery, Jr. Beery presents a characterization unequaled since “Viva Villa” as he drives a borax train back and forth across Death Valley’s treacherous canyons to the nearest railroad point, 162 miles away. Miss Rambeau is the owner of the hotel and saloon where Beery is in the habit of “undehydrating” himself, and the battles between the two are reminiscent of the best brawls in “Tugboat Annie.” Carrillo, as Beery’s Indian, Piute Pete, repeats the success he scored with Beery in “Viva Villa!” Between the three there are a dozen laughs a minute. NEW FIRE TOWER WILL PROTECT WOODED LAND Protection from forest fire will be extended to approximately 125,000 acres of land surrounding the Green-Sullivan County State Forest at the result of erection of a 100-foot steel tower at the forest, Virgil M. Simmons, commissioner of the Department of Conservation said today. The tower, being erected by the Division of Forestry, will be located north of Pleasantville. Work was started during the past week and the tower will be ready for use during the fall season. MELODY AT DAWN I hear a melody at dawning, song of a bird From his throat came a note, sweetest ever hear. He awakens all the world, with tones so true ’Tis his way to greet the day, and bid the night a i.cu. As he swings in apple tree, pouring forth true melody Soft wind sway the song my way, ’tis now a part of me. When my heart is heavy, and all the world seem wrong. Let me hear the echo of that melody at dawn. —Muriel Staley.
JULY IN THE ROSE GARDEN (By Chester D. Wedrick, Ont.) With the advent of July, the first bloom, and the most profuse, in the Hybrid Tea class is over for the season, except in far northern districts. The weather is usually hotter and drier, and the month as a whole can be classed as the hardest one of the summer on roses, though sometimes August is still hotter. Usually, though, the latter part of August brings rains and cooler weather. Even if there is ample rainfall in July, the ground should be mulched well or cultivated after every rain, to conserve moisture and retain a dust mulch, preventing much soil evaporation. Right now there are apt to be odd plants in the rose garden that seem to be steadily deteriorating in spite of all that can be done. The best thing is to dig them up and burn them, as they are sure to be tlie first ones to be attacked by disease. Many Roses, while lovely, cannot be called permanent and a couple of years is about all some of the weaker ones can be depended on to be satisfactory. These should be noted and omitted from your purchases another season, unless you are willing to discard them often and replant. Be sure and trim off all seed pods, as they are not merely unsightly, t>ut a heavy drain on the vitality of the plants. Many of the Polyanthas will seed in tremendous quantities and all bloom-spikes should be removed as soon as faded but do not cut long stems off on these. In watering your roses, soak them when you do, and then not

for several days eveiv in the hottest weather, and they will do much better than with a sprinkling daily as the hot sun evaporates it. almost immediately. From now on until the fall bloom comes the Rose Garden is mainly dependent on the decorative Hybrid Teas and the Polyanthas. True, they are not as individually perfect as the others, but all have a beauty of their own in beds that cannot be attained from less-floriferous kinds. Picked in bud, in sprays they make very attractive bouquets when other roses are not available, and they bloom and bloom with the freedom of geraniums and last for many years. If the plants seem weak-grow-ing, a good application of a wellbalanced fertilizer ’will help out during this trying period and get the plants in' shape for the fall bloom. The pernicious habit of planting annual flowers in rose beds, is noticed as particularly harmful from now on. They appropriate much food the roses besides moisture, and frequently grow so rampantly as to literally smother bush Hybrid Teas So don’t be guilty of this shortsighted practice, for Roses resent being crowded by other plants. If your Dorothy Perkins, and other similar small-flowered Wlchuriana Climbers are through blooming, remove all blooming canes and trim out the weaker of the new shoots to give more vigor lo the rest. This will lessen the liability of mildewing, .and give the plants a much more attractive appearance; also lessening chances of insect injury. If any canes have borers, they should be removed at cnee cutting low enough to get the grubs, and burning them before the worms can escape. In fact all prunings from rose bushes should be burned as soon as possible. They are not merely unsightly but often a menace to your roses. If you can possibly spare the time.look over other Rose Gardens and note how they are standing the hot weather. Often you will notice plants of kinds you have that are doing splendidly, where yours were anything but a success, or often the reverse. If possible, find out what understocks they are grown on, as this is often the cause of failure and again the soil may be very different from imurs which often accounts for their success. —Madison Cooper Gardening Magazine.
